SUMMARY:Barrence Whitfield & Sal Baglio present The Joyful Noise Caravan & Medicine Show
DESCRIPTION:The Firehouse Center for the Arts Presents… \n \nBarrence Whitfield & Sal Baglio – The Joyful Noise Caravan & Medicine Show\nfeaturing \nAnthony Geraci keyboards\, Henley Douglas Jr saxophone\, Wolf Ginandes bass & Seth Pappas drums \n  \nPurchase Tickets\n\n  \nR&B howler Barrence Whitfield is a man who lives for the era when rhythm & blues and rock & roll walke hand in hand\, and his revved-up music and over-the-top vocal style make him one of the wildest frontmen of his time. A frantic soul shouter in the spirit of \, \, and Don Covay\, Whitfield and his band earned a poten cult following after the release of their self-titled debut album in 1984. 1985’s Dig Yourself and 1987 Ow! Ow! Ow! expanded on its energy. Whitfield sat out most of the 2000s\, but 2012’s Dig Thy Savage Sou proved he still had the goods\, and 2018’s Soul Flowers of Titan and 2023’s Glory showed his command of party-starting soul was still potent. As a singer\, guitarist and composer\, Sal Baglio has touched all the bases that have rounded out a successful musical career. But with his recent work as a solo artist\, Baglio embarks upon a new path that looks backward in the most delightful way. Baglio’s music and solo performances dial up a past that is easily imagined in a less-distracted age where music bursts boldly out of a car’s AM radio on a summer drive or floats in the imagination of a young solitary artist learning to strum his first guit New paths or old\, Baglio projects a welcome sense of place\, family and friends\, a“pocketfull of memories” where streets named London and Liverpool strike more than mere fancy allusions to the Beatles\, the Kinks and others. They set fire in the mind of a young artist that will forever remain in his person \n \n  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:The White House Effect Documentary
DESCRIPTION:The Newburyport Documentary Film Festival and the Greater Newburyport Green Expo proudly present: \n“The White House Effect” Documentary\n$10 / Suggested Donation \nPurchase Tickets\n\n  \nA Pivotal Moment in Climate History Revealed\nCap off your Green Expo experience with an exclusive evening screening of the powerful documentary “The White House Effect\,” directed by the acclaimed team of Bonni Cohen\, Pedro Kos\, and Jon Shenk. \n  \nFilm Synopsis\n“The White House Effect\,” from directors Bonni Cohen\, Pedro Kos and Jon Shenk\, examines a crucial missed opportunity in climate history. Through archival footage\, the film focuses on the George H.W. Bush administration (1988-1992) when Bush promised to use “the White House effect” to address global warming. \nThe documentary reveals how this promise unraveled as Bush found himself caught between his chief of staff John Sununu and industry leaders on one side\, and his EPA chief Bill Reilly and scientists on the other. The film culminates with the 1992 Rio Earth Summit\, where U.S. actions undermined global emissions agreements\, setting the stage for our current climate challenges. \n  \nWhy This Film Matters to Our Community\nAs we gather for the Green Expo to explore practical sustainability solutions\, this documentary provides crucial historical context for understanding why climate action remains challenging today. By examining this pivotal moment in climate history\, we can better appreciate the forces that shape environmental policy and the importance of community-led initiatives like the Green Expo. \n  \nNote: This is a separate ticketed event from the daytime Green Expo activities. \n  \nThis screening is presented in conjunction with the 2025 Greater Newburyport Green Expo\, made possible through funding from the City of Newburyport Resiliency Committee\, via a grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs’ Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Program. SUMMARY:Darlin' Corey with Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem
DESCRIPTION:The Firehouse Center for the Arts presents… \nDarlin’ Corey with Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem\n$25 / All Tickets \nPurchase Tickets\n\nDarlin’ Corey\nDarlin’ Corey features the singing and playing of three accomplished musicians of the thriving music scene of Portland\, ME. Award winning fiddler and singer Erica Brown on fiddle\, guitar\, vocals\, notable songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Matt Shipman on guitar\, vocals\, mandolin\, bouzouki\, banjo and Portland’s favorite bass player Kris Day\, who has also toured with legends like Link Wray\, Dale Hawkins\, Ronnie Dawson and Joe Clay. \nTheir music is a diverse and unique blend of folk with influences from bluegrass and old time music. Drawing on these threads of North American folk music\, their elegant harmonies are the beating heart of their sound\, in both their original music and the traditional old time\, bluegrass and New England influenced music they regularly showcase. In Darlin’ Corey’s singing and playing\, you can feel the many years of dedication to these celebrated musical traditions.  \nTogether they create an engaging performance of thoughtful originals\, traditional songs and tunes\, and songs that influenced them along the way. Erica Brown’s fiddle-playing is at turns virtuosic and completely unpretentious. Matt Shipman is an ideal counterpart as his versatility on a dizzying array of stringed instruments (guitar\, Irish bouzouki\, 5-string banjo\, mandolin) blend seamlessly\, never timid or overpowering. Kris Day holds it all together with his solid bass playing. \n \nRani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem\nHarmony\, rhythm\, indelible songs – these are the hallmarks of Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem\, the New England based folk quartet now in its 20th year. From the Newport Folk Festival to California World Music Festival and beyond\, this band’s steadfast brew of wit\, camaraderie\, and musicality leaves audiences everywhere humming and hopeful\, spirits renewed. Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem are Rani Arbo (fiddle\, guitar)\, Andrew Kinsey (bass\, banjo\, ukulele)\, Anand Nayak (electric and acoustic guitars) and Scott Kessel (percussion). At the helm\, Arbo is “blessed with an unmistakable voice\, both light and sultry\, with a hint of tremolo and smoke” (Acoustic Guitar). With Kinsey and Nayak’s vibrant baritones and Kessel’s resonant bass\, the band’s signature lockstep harmonies can shake the rafters or hush the room. Arbo’s fiddle is sweet and sinewy\, while Nayak’s guitar stretches across genre lines. Kinsey’s old-time bass anchors the deep groove of Kessel’s homemade percussion kit — a truly funky collection of cardboard boxes\, tin cans\, caulk tubes\, packing-tape tambourines\, bottle-cap rattles\, Mongolian jaw harps\, and a vinyl suitcase.  \n \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Homegrown National Park with Dr. Douglas W. Tallamy
DESCRIPTION:City of Newburyport Resiliency Committee presents… \nHomegrown National Park\nwith Dr. Douglas W. Tallamy\nPurchase Tickets\n\nA reception will be held prior to the talk\, with a book signing to follow. \nDoors open at 6:30PM\nThe talk will begin at 7:00 PM\nFree to the Public / Open Seating \n  \nAbout the Talk\nDr. Tallamy will introduce his visionary concept of “Homegrown National Park\,” a national movement to restore biodiversity by transforming our yards\, communities\, and surrounding lands. He explains why our current parks and preserves alone cannot sustain the ecosystems on which we depend. His practical approach invites everyone to participate in conservation by reducing lawn space\, planting native species\, and removing invasives. Dr. Tallamy’s goal is to restore 20 million acres with native plants—equivalent to half of America’s current lawn space—to create healthy ecological networks that can withstand environmental challenges. \n  \n  \nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Douglas W. Tallamy is a distinguished professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware. A leading voice in conservation and sustainable gardening\, he is the author of several acclaimed books including the New York Times bestsellers “Bringing Nature Home\,” “The Living Landscape\,” and “Nature’s Best Hope.” Dr. Tallamy founded the Homegrown National Park initiative to promote native plant propagation and biodiversity restoration. His research demonstrates how native plants support local wildlife—his own backyard oak tree hosts over 240 species of caterpillars. Dr. Tallamy combines scientific expertise with engaging\, accessible presentations that inspire audiences to take practical action for environmental conservation. \n  \n  \n  \nHomegrown National Park \n  \nThis screening is made possible through funding from the City of Newburyport Resiliency Committee\, via a grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs’ Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Program.

SUMMARY:Maya de Vitry
DESCRIPTION:The Firehouse Center for the Arts Presents… \nMaya de Vitry\n$25 / All Tickets \nPurchase Tickets\n\nOriginally from Lancaster\, PA\, Maya de Vitry is a Nashville-based artist whose music blurs the lines of folk\, indie rock\, and Americana. An admirer of the dedicated song craft of writers like John Prine\, Gillian Welch\, and Townes Van Zandt — and of the stirring vocals of artists like Bonnie Raitt and Nina Simone — Maya de Vitry’s music invites listeners into a space of openness and connection. After a formative chapter with the roots-Americana trio The Stray Birds\, she launched her solo career with the 2019 album Adaptations\, earning praise from Rolling Stone Country\, NPR Music\, and No Depression. Since then\, she has built a devoted following\, drawn to both her recordings and her powerful live performances. Known for her magnetic voice and hard-won sense of purpose\, Maya has toured in North America and Europe\, supporting artists like The Wood Brothers\, Aoife O’Donovan\, John Craigie\, and Mighty Poplar. Her songs have also appeared on albums by Molly Tuttle\, Lindsay Lou\, and Steve Poltz\, and her skills as a multi-instrumentalist and harmony singer have contributed to many Nashville recordings. \nHer fourth full-length release in just six years\, The Only Moment\, is a 10-track testament to personal reinvention and creative growth. “I’m not just making different music now. It feels like I’m breathing in a different atmosphere\,” she reflects on her evolution from The Stray Birds to her solo journey. Her sense of liberation is especially apparent in her live shows\, which have become a space for spontaneity\, peace\, and freedom\, often woven together with personal stories that connect the songs. “After the show\, I just want to know if I’ve helped you feel more free\,” Maya says. “That’s my unspoken agreement—to\nmyself\, my bandmates\, and everyone in the audience.” \nDespite a seemingly relentless creative pace\, the recording of The Only Moment— produced by Maya and mixed by Grammy-winning engineer Justin Francis (Madison Cunningham)—was deliberate and unhurried. “It was like making a long-exposure photograph\, but with music\,” Maya explains\, having allowed the songs to breathe over the course of nearly three years. “I shelved this record for months at a time\, and each time I came back to it\, I heard new possibilities. In today’s music industry\, there’s pressure to share everything\, to turn our process into ‘content.’ But I treasured keeping this record to myself and letting the songs simmer.” \n \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Mark Erelli
DESCRIPTION:The Firehouse Center for the Arts Presents… \nMark Erelli\n$30 / All Tickets \nPurchase Tickets\n\nDuring a performance in summer 2020\, Mark Erelli looked down at his guitar neck and couldn’t believe what he saw. Or rather\, what he couldn’t see: his fingers on the frets. Soon after\, a diagnosis of retinitis pigmentosa (RP)\, a degenerative eye disease\, would bring some answers\, but it also yielded new questions. Does diminished eyesight correlate with lesser insight? Does your songwriting change when your perception of the world around you changes? These questions\, and Erelli’s hunt for creative agency\, are at the heart of his new album Lay Your Darkness Down (due Feb 3 on Soundly Music).  \nMark Erelli reminds us to push forward through the fog; because we can’t see a path ahead\, doesn’t mean we won’t get to the destination we’re in search of. Such as he sings on “Fuel for the Fire\,” “You can’t live in fear / But you can use it as fuel for the fire.”
