SUMMARY:Session Americana with Ali McGuirk
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets\n\nSession Americana (Boston) is a rock band in a tea cup\, or possibly a folk band in a whiskey bottle. This band/collective of talented musicians craft a musical experience unlike any other. On stage is a collapsible bar table wired with microphones\, a vintage suitcase recast as a kick drum\, an old Estey field organ\, a pre-war parlor guitar\, a mandocello and all of its smaller siblings\, a harmonica case fire damaged when Jack’s bar went up in flames and graffitied by Depeche Mode roadies\, and an assortment of other instruments that get passed around in this freewheeling modern hootenanny. The anything-could-happen feel of a Session show depends on craft that’s not accidental or easily won; they bring a kind of ease and genuineness to this timeless music\, sometimes presenting the latest batch of original songs\, sometimes reaching back into depths of the American “song bag”. \nCheck out their 2018 album\, Live at the Haybarn Theatre: \n \nIf you like…\n\nEilen Jewell\nLula Wiles\nJonathan Byrd\nThe Black Lillies\n\nYou’ll like Session Americana. \nCheck out Session Americana’s website here  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:The Sweetback Sisters Annual Country Christmas Singalong Spectacular
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: $30 for adults\, $20 for children \nPurchase Tickets\n\nChristmastime is here again and so are the Sweetback Sisters with their annual Country Christmas Singalong Spectacular! This wildly popular show (returning to Newburyport for the sixth year in a row) delivers a veritable explosion of yuletide splendor\, complete with trivia\, prizes\, and\, of course\, all the holiday tunes you know and love. Year-round\, the Sweetback Sisters and their band of brothers wow audiences with their precise\, family-style harmonies and blazing instrumentals. For this show\, the Queens of Christmastime bring their signature mix of modern nostalgia to a wide array of holiday classics and hidden gems that are sure to get even your scroogiest uncle in a festive spirit. Songbooks and plenty of warm fuzzy feelings provided. \nHailed as “brilliant” by NBC New York\, The Sweetback Sisters first emerged in 2007 with their debut EP\, ‘Bang!’ The collection earned them a record deal with stalwart indie label Signature Sounds\, and over the course of three ensuing albums\, the band built a dedicated following in the US and Europe and racked up a heap of critical acclaim. The New Yorker raved that the women are “strong singers who revel in close harmonies\,” while Sing Out! said that their music “bristles with the energy of the very best young American performers\,” and NPR praised them as “Americana darlings with a roadhouse edge.” With a live show that The Boston Globe described as “the perfect balance of sass\, sincerity and swing\,” the Sisters have performed everywhere from A Prairie Home Companion to Mountain Stage and graced festivals from coast to coast in addition to selling out theaters with their annual Country Christmas Singalong Spectacular. \nProceeds from this performance benefit the Christmas Tree Santas. The local non-profit has a holiday mission to spread hope and joy by giving free Christmas trees with lights and ornaments to low-income families. This year the Santas will give away over 2\,000 trees to individuals in need. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:The HillBenders present The Who's TOMMY
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets\n\n“Ever since I was a young boy I played the silver ball”  \nMaybe not your standard bluegrass lyric\, but a line known by all the world from the biggest rock opera of all time\, The Who’s Tommy.  50 years after its original release\, this classic of classic rock has now been fully realized as a full length bluegrass tribute featuring Springfield\, Missouri’s The HillBenders.  Conceived and produced by SXSW co-founder and longtime musician/producer Louis Jay Meyers\, this Bluegrass Opry brings a new perspective to Tommy while paying total respect to its creators. \nMeyers had been looking for the right band to pull off this high wire bluegrass approach for over twenty years and The HillBenders fit the bill.  With a perfect mix of acoustic musicianship and rock n roll showmanship\, The HillBenders bring Pete Townshend’s original vision to life in a new and exciting way. \nThe HillBenders are one of the few bluegrass groups that recognize their ability to bridge the gap between the common music consumer and the bluegrass genre. With their widely varied influences\, they are trying to bring to bluegrass songs that unify. \n“Covering The Who’s TOMMY in its entirety was a genius move” \n-Rolling Stone \n \nIf you like…\n\nGreensky Bluegrass\nRailroad Earth\nSteep Canyon Rangers\nThe Travelin’ McCourys\n\nYou’ll like The HillBenders. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:The Fine Art of Documentary: Why beautiful pictures of war\, poverty\, and disease matter.
DESCRIPTION:Photo © 2016 Amilton Neves \nLecture followed by Q&A\n Adults ($10)\, Students ($5) Plus $2 processing charge. \nPurchase Tickets\n\n  \nPresented by Glenn Ruga\, Founder and Director\, Social Documentary Network and Executive Editor\, ZEKE Magazine\, and Barbara Ayotte\, Communications Director\, Social Documentary Network Editor\, ZEKE Magazine. \nCo-sponsored by Sweethaven Gallery and Firehouse Center for the Arts \n  \nThe challenging work presented on SDN explores poverty\, disease\, environmental degradation\, war\, migration\, and manyothers. Why does it matter that a photograph of a malnourished child is composed well\, or that a photograph of a migrant family camping in the mud on the Serbia/Hungarian border uses black and white tonality in a masterful way? Aren’t the facts presented by the photos in such cases what is most important? Does form matter when the subject is about life and death? \n  \n  \nGlenn Ruga and Barbara Ayotte will make a compelling argument why form matters\, why art matters\, and why it is a disservice to the issues being explored to only focus on the raw facts visible on the surface and not to also honor the integrity of a photograph created with the talent and skill of an artist who has organized these elements into a meaningful\, and often beautiful\, composition. \n  \nLaunched in October 2008\, the SDN website today has presented more than 3\,200 compelling online exhibits submitted to the site by more than 2\,000 photographers from all corners of the globe documenting issues as diverse as the effects of modernization on Kathmandu\, homelessness in the U.S.\, the consequences of oil exploitation in the Niger Delta\, and reconciliation in Rwanda. All photographers on SDN share a common curiosity about the human condition and a strong desire to communicate their insights through words and photographs. \nIn 2015\, SDN launchedZEKE: The Magazine of Global Documentary\, a print and digital publication presenting the best work from the SDN website combined with in-depth articles written by journalists exploring in greater detail the themes presented by the photographers. \nPurchase Tickets

DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets\n\n\nLecture by Shawn Carey followed by Q&A\nCo-sponsored by Sweethaven Gallery and Firehouse Center for the Arts \nAdults ($10)\, Students ($5) Plus $2 processing charge. \nSnowy Owls\, Atlantic Puffins\, and American Kestrels are connected by more than simply a resemblance of form or function. A crucial thread ties them together: each one has an advocate committed to protecting it and educating others about its plight. Migration Productions’ latest work\, “A Wing And A Care\,” opens a window onto the lives of these three birds\, and introduces you to the men dedicated to their preservation and survival. \n“A Wing And A Care” follows the stories of these three men as they work to protect the birds they love\, and shows how a single individual can make a world of difference in the life of a bird. And it asks a critical question: how can each one of us get involved and help build a better future for these incredible birds? \n  \nShawn Carey \nOriginally from Pennsylvania\, Shawn moved to Boston\, Massachusetts in 1986 and has been photographing birds and other wildlife for over 20 years. He’s been teaching wildlife photography for Mass Audubon for the past 18 years. He’s on the board of directors for Eastern Mass HawkWatch where he serves as their Vice President. He’s also on the advisory board for the Massachusetts Audubon Society and Mass Audubon Museum of American Bird Art. He is past board member for the Brookline Bird Club and past council member for the Nuttall Ornithological Club. Shawn co-founded Migration Productions in 1996 with Jim Grady and the two have produced all its productions. Shawn also provides almost all digital photography used in their productions. “I LOVE the natural world; if it walks\, crawls\, flies\, swims or slithers…I’ll photograph it!”\nPurchase Tickets
