SUMMARY:Soggy Po' Boys
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets\n\n“..with all the ebullience and spirit that’s the stuff of life. Eat up.” – Debbie Burke \nThe Soggy Po’ Boys are a New England-based septet that offers an unforgettable experience of traditional New Orleans music. Come out to celebrate the release of their new album “All In Favor” and bask in the rich New Orleans-inspired sound. \nBorn on a snowy Fat Tuesday night of 2012\, the Soggy Po’ Boys have been honing their craft of New Orleans’ music in their Tuesday residency in their home town of Dover\, New Hampshire. The New Orleans flavored septet doesn’t just play their weekly gig and call it at that. No\, they fit in more than a hundred shows every year\, from festivals and concerts to politics-infused burlesque collaborations and street parades. Part of the beauty of New Orleans music is that it’s celebrated and appreciated wherever it goes\, from the street to the theater. The Po’ Boys are doing their part to spread the greatest music on earth around their home in New England and when touring\, throughout the rest of the country. The Soggy Po’ Boys serve their jazz messy\, mixing brass-fueled mayhem with spirituals\, Meters-style old-school funk\, and the Caribbean side of the New Orleans tradition. \nCheck out their 2018 album\, Smoke!\n \nIf you like…\n\nFeline & Strange\nAbel Maxwell\nFrancesco Castaldo\nBlue Sky 5+2\n\nYou’ll like Soggy Po’ Boys \nCheck out Soggy Po’ Boys’ website here \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Sonny Landreth and Cindy Cashdollar
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets\n\nSonny Landreth: \nThe lean Mississippi native\, who grew up in Lafayette\, Louisiana\, had already been playing horn for three years when he got his hands on his first six-string and fell deeply in love. Slide guitar spoke to Landreth immediately. He recalls\, “When I realized that my slide heroes had mastered a vocal quality on the guitar\, I wanted to do the same thing. At the start\, the sounds I made were rough on everybody – my family\, and especially my poor dog and cat – but eventually I was able to develop my own instrumental voice and began to apply that to any style I wanted to play.” \nAt age 17 Landreth attended three very different shows in his home state that would have a great impact on him. “Amazingly\, in the span of about a year\, I met and heard B.B. King in New Iberia\, Jimi Hendrix in Baton Rouge and Clifton Chenier in Lafayette. Needless to say\, all that had a profound effect on me. To this day\, I still think about those experiences.” Many years later\, he became a member of Chenier’s Red Hot Louisiana Band. With steamy roadhouse sets that often ran for hours without a break and stretched songs out for their maximum impact on the dance floor\, he was put to the test. Landreth quickly developed the ability to change keys\, rhythms and even musical styles in a flash. \nAlong the way Landreth has continued to develop his vision and his musical voice\, growing increasingly original and diverse\, expanding from blues\, zydeco\, folk\, country and jazz into increasingly category-blurring musical excursions like Bound By the Blues. \nCindy Cashdollar:
\nDobro\, steel guitar and lap steel player Cindy Cashdollar’s career has taken some surprising twists and turns that have led her to work with many leading artists in various genres; including Ryan Adams\, Bob Dylan\, Van Morrison\, Dave Alvin\, Rod Stewart\, Albert Lee\, Asleep At The Wheel\, Marcia Ball\, Jorma Kaukonen\, Leon Redbone\, BeauSoleil\, Daniel Lanois\, Redd Volkaert\, & Peter Rowan. Cindy’s unerring ability to perfectly complement a song or step out with a tasteful\, imaginative\, and exciting solo – and to do it in so many musical genres – has made her one of the most in-demand musicians on the American roots music scene. Her debut CD\, “Slide Show”\, features guest artists comprising a Who’s Who from the landscape of Roots & Americana music. Cindy was inducted into the Texas Steel Guitar Hall Of Fame in 2011 (the first female to be inducted)\, and The Texas Music Hall Of Fame in 2012 \nCindy first heard the unique sliding sound of the Dobro in her hometown of Woodstock\, New York where she honed her skills playing with bluegrass legend John Herald\, blues great Paul Butterfield\, Levon Helm and Rick Danko of The Band\, and many others who lived in the small but musically hip Catskill mountain town. Eight years and thousands of miles on the road with the premier western swing group Asleep At The Wheel helped her introduce the classic sounds of the non-pedal steel to enthusiastic audiences worldwide\, and brought her five Grammy Awards and opportunities to work with musicians of the caliber of Willie Nelson\, Merle Haggard\, Dolly Parton and The Dixie Chicks. \nWhether adding driving leads behind Rod Stewart or Ryan Adams\, swinging an instrumental with Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion band\, or trading blazing licks with Texas Telecaster master Redd Volkaert\, Cindy does it all with grace\, imagination\, and taste. And\, in answer to her most frequently asked question\, yes\, Cashdollar is a real name. \nTake a listen!\n\n\n\nCheck out Sonny’s website here \nCheck out Cindy’s website here \n  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Front Country
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: $15*\n*Firehouse members receive a 10% discount \nPurchase Tickets\n\nIt wasn’t a given that these musicians would wind up in anything remotely resembling a bluegrass band. Singer Melody Walker got into world music and belted out roots-rock. Bassist Jeremy Darrow studied jazz. Leif Karlstrom trained as a classical violinist\, and still prefers that title to “fiddle player.” Mandolinist Adam Roszkiewicz studied classical guitar at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. \nIn the bluegrass world\, musicians tend to define themselves by their relationships to tradition — specifically\, the tradition of high-and-lonesome singing and a hard-driving sound. There are regional variations from Virginia to Colorado. The West Coast has its own freewheeling tradition\, and that’s where Front Country started out: at a monthly jam in San Francisco. Then its members heard about a band contest at a bluegrass festival. \n“And we ended up winning that band competition\,” Walker says. “The very next day\, I made a website for the band because I thought maybe people will be Googling Front Country at that point\, possibly.” \nFrom that point on\, Front Country was a serious band. \nHave a listen: \n \nIf you like…\n\nThe Travelin’ McCourys\nHoneysuckle\nThe Steel Wheels\nDella Mae\n\nYou’ll like Front Country. \nPurchase Tickets

The mist effect will be achieved with the lighting design. \nHistory of the Methuen Ballet Ensemble: \nVanessa Rae Voter founded Methuen Ballet Ensemble in 1989 as a platform for promising students to showcase their talents\, performing both classical and modern ballets for the public. Her inspiration came from her years as a dancer with Boston Ballet. During the audition process for The Nutcracker\, those children not cast in roles touched her\, by their disappointment and tears. She vowed that someday she would have a company of her own\, where every child who auditioned would be guaranteed a part. She realized her dream and has been successfully staging The Nutcracker for over 20 years\, never having rejected an auditioning dancer. \nAbout Vanessa Rae Voter: \nVanessa Rae Voter is Artistic Director and Choreographer for Methuen Ballet Ensemble\, a semi-professional ballet company. She is also Director of the Classical Ballet program at Voter’s School of Dance\, founded by her mother\, Pam Voter\, in 1951. \nMs. Voter attended The Boston Conservatory. In addition to dancing with Boston Ballet\, she also performed with Ballet Dance Theatre of Boston. Her extensive training includes instruction from Marina Svetlova\, Madame Sulamith Messerer (former Prima Ballerina and teacher with the Bolshoi Ballet)\, E. Virginia Williams\, Violette Verdy\, Robert Pierce\, and David Howard. She has been a guest teacher for Dance Teachers Club of Boston and Dance Teachers Club of Brockton\, as well as serving on judge’s panels in both Boston and Brockton. She is a member of Dance Teachers Club of Boston and National Council of America and a member of Dance Masters of America. \nIn addition to teaching classical ballet on a full-time basis\, Ms. Voter has also choreographed all ballets performed by Methuen Ballet Ensemble. Tonight’s Super Story Slam is the year’s finale in which we invite all of our 2019 Full Moon Story Slam winners to tell us one more tale – this time a longer story focused around the theme – Destiny. \nThe Story Slam is our chance to gather friends and share true stories from our lives. Simply put\, a story slam is a competition based on the art of storytelling. It puts a dual emphasis on content and performance\, encouraging storytellers to focus on what they’re saying and how they’re saying it. It is an exercise in crafting stories within a set time limit and it is great entertainment! Story slammers sign up on the night to tell a 5-minute short story on the evening’s theme. There are opportunities for one-minute stories too! \nThe three criteria for the judges:\n1.) The story has an arc: a beginning\, a point of change\, and a resolution.\n2.) Presentation of the story.\n3.) Time (no longer than five minutes) and connection to the them \n  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Session Americana with Ali McGuirk
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets\n\nSession Americana (Boston) is a rock band in a tea cup\, or possibly a folk band in a whiskey bottle. This band/collective of talented musicians craft a musical experience unlike any other. On stage is a collapsible bar table wired with microphones\, a vintage suitcase recast as a kick drum\, an old Estey field organ\, a pre-war parlor guitar\, a mandocello and all of its smaller siblings\, a harmonica case fire damaged when Jack’s bar went up in flames and graffitied by Depeche Mode roadies\, and an assortment of other instruments that get passed around in this freewheeling modern hootenanny. The anything-could-happen feel of a Session show depends on craft that’s not accidental or easily won; they bring a kind of ease and genuineness to this timeless music\, sometimes presenting the latest batch of original songs\, sometimes reaching back into depths of the American “song bag”. \nCheck out their 2018 album\, Live at the Haybarn Theatre: \n \nIf you like…\n\nEilen Jewell\nLula Wiles\nJonathan Byrd\nThe Black Lillies\n\nYou’ll like Session Americana. \nCheck out Session Americana’s website here  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:The Sweetback Sisters Annual Country Christmas Singalong Spectacular
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: $30 for adults\, $20 for children \nPurchase Tickets\n\nChristmastime is here again and so are the Sweetback Sisters with their annual Country Christmas Singalong Spectacular! This wildly popular show (returning to Newburyport for the sixth year in a row) delivers a veritable explosion of yuletide splendor\, complete with trivia\, prizes\, and\, of course\, all the holiday tunes you know and love. Year-round\, the Sweetback Sisters and their band of brothers wow audiences with their precise\, family-style harmonies and blazing instrumentals. For this show\, the Queens of Christmastime bring their signature mix of modern nostalgia to a wide array of holiday classics and hidden gems that are sure to get even your scroogiest uncle in a festive spirit. Songbooks and plenty of warm fuzzy feelings provided. \nHailed as “brilliant” by NBC New York\, The Sweetback Sisters first emerged in 2007 with their debut EP\, ‘Bang!’ The collection earned them a record deal with stalwart indie label Signature Sounds\, and over the course of three ensuing albums\, the band built a dedicated following in the US and Europe and racked up a heap of critical acclaim. The New Yorker raved that the women are “strong singers who revel in close harmonies\,” while Sing Out! said that their music “bristles with the energy of the very best young American performers\,” and NPR praised them as “Americana darlings with a roadhouse edge.” With a live show that The Boston Globe described as “the perfect balance of sass\, sincerity and swing\,” the Sisters have performed everywhere from A Prairie Home Companion to Mountain Stage and graced festivals from coast to coast in addition to selling out theaters with their annual Country Christmas Singalong Spectacular. \nProceeds from this performance benefit the Christmas Tree Santas. The local non-profit has a holiday mission to spread hope and joy by giving free Christmas trees with lights and ornaments to low-income families. This year the Santas will give away over 2\,000 trees to individuals in need. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:The HillBenders present The Who's TOMMY
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets\n\n“Ever since I was a young boy I played the silver ball”  \nMaybe not your standard bluegrass lyric\, but a line known by all the world from the biggest rock opera of all time\, The Who’s Tommy.  50 years after its original release\, this classic of classic rock has now been fully realized as a full length bluegrass tribute featuring Springfield\, Missouri’s The HillBenders.  Conceived and produced by SXSW co-founder and longtime musician/producer Louis Jay Meyers\, this Bluegrass Opry brings a new perspective to Tommy while paying total respect to its creators. \nMeyers had been looking for the right band to pull off this high wire bluegrass approach for over twenty years and The HillBenders fit the bill.  With a perfect mix of acoustic musicianship and rock n roll showmanship\, The HillBenders bring Pete Townshend’s original vision to life in a new and exciting way. \nThe HillBenders are one of the few bluegrass groups that recognize their ability to bridge the gap between the common music consumer and the bluegrass genre. With their widely varied influences\, they are trying to bring to bluegrass songs that unify. \n“Covering The Who’s TOMMY in its entirety was a genius move” \n-Rolling Stone \n \nIf you like…\n\nGreensky Bluegrass\nRailroad Earth\nSteep Canyon Rangers\nThe Travelin’ McCourys\n\nYou’ll like The HillBenders. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:The Fine Art of Documentary: Why beautiful pictures of war\, poverty\, and disease matter.
DESCRIPTION:Photo © 2016 Amilton Neves \nLecture followed by Q&A\n Adults ($10)\, Students ($5) Plus $2 processing charge. \nPurchase Tickets\n\n  \nPresented by Glenn Ruga\, Founder and Director\, Social Documentary Network and Executive Editor\, ZEKE Magazine\, and Barbara Ayotte\, Communications Director\, Social Documentary Network Editor\, ZEKE Magazine. \nCo-sponsored by Sweethaven Gallery and Firehouse Center for the Arts \n  \nThe challenging work presented on SDN explores poverty\, disease\, environmental degradation\, war\, migration\, and manyothers. Why does it matter that a photograph of a malnourished child is composed well\, or that a photograph of a migrant family camping in the mud on the Serbia/Hungarian border uses black and white tonality in a masterful way? Aren’t the facts presented by the photos in such cases what is most important? Does form matter when the subject is about life and death? \n  \n  \nGlenn Ruga and Barbara Ayotte will make a compelling argument why form matters\, why art matters\, and why it is a disservice to the issues being explored to only focus on the raw facts visible on the surface and not to also honor the integrity of a photograph created with the talent and skill of an artist who has organized these elements into a meaningful\, and often beautiful\, composition. \n  \nLaunched in October 2008\, the SDN website today has presented more than 3\,200 compelling online exhibits submitted to the site by more than 2\,000 photographers from all corners of the globe documenting issues as diverse as the effects of modernization on Kathmandu\, homelessness in the U.S.\, the consequences of oil exploitation in the Niger Delta\, and reconciliation in Rwanda. All photographers on SDN share a common curiosity about the human condition and a strong desire to communicate their insights through words and photographs. \nIn 2015\, SDN launchedZEKE: The Magazine of Global Documentary\, a print and digital publication presenting the best work from the SDN website combined with in-depth articles written by journalists exploring in greater detail the themes presented by the photographers. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Good & Kissed
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets\n\n\nGood & Kissed\, written and performed by Miranda Jonte\, is a one-woman-performance that tells the story of a woman who discovers her longtime boyfriend’s double life\, and heads to an island off South Carolina with her family to heal\, only to encounter a gorgeous paddle board instructor who reminds her that she is still very much alive.\n\n“From the moment she steps on the stage\, Jonte lives up to her self-titled billing as “teller of stories” — she is an accomplished story-teller who personally connected with each audience member\, inviting us into her world and her very personal experience. Despite her brutal honesty and raw emotion\, Jonte expertly walked the line of keeping her story personal without making us feel like intruders. She commanded her emotions flawlessly\, making for a very compelling narrative.”\n-Julie Janson\, DC Metro\n\n\nTickets $15
