SUMMARY:Lula Wiles
DESCRIPTION:With opening act Dan Blakeslee\n  \n“Lula Wiles are pushing the boundaries of Americana\, crafting narrative lyrics that are just as detailed and complex as their tightly woven harmonies… The result is brilliant.” – Sound of Boston\n  \nTICKETS*:\n$15.00 In Advance\n$20.00 Day Of \n*Firehouse members receive a 10% discount \nWhat will we do? For Lula Wiles\, the trio made up of Isa Burke\, Eleanor Buckland\, and Mali Obomsawin\, the question is central to the creation of their music – and it’s the title of their new album. “We wanted to make an album that reflected\, in a current way\, what we are all staying up late thinking about and talking about over drinks at the dinner table\,” says Obomsawin. “What is everyone worried about\, confiding in their friends about\, losing sleep about?” On What Will We Do\, the band’s sophomore album\, the trio’s voices burn\, twist together\, mingle\, and rise like smoke signaling changes to come. But anchoring that delicate touch is a mastery of folk music – and a willingness to subvert its hallowed conventions. \nLong before they were in a band together\, the members of Lula Wiles were singing folk songs and trading fiddle tunes at camp in Maine. On those warm summer nights\, playing music was just plain fun. But the members of Lula Wiles carry those early lessons of community and the meaning of shared art with them to this day\, as they seek to create music that questions cultural virtues\, soothes aching wounds\, and envisions a better world. \nLula Wiles came of age in Boston\, in the practice rooms of Berklee College of Music and the city’s lively roots scene. In 2016\, the band self-released Lula Wiles\, a sensitive\, twang-tinged collection of originals. Since then\, they have toured internationally\, winning fans at the Newport Folk Festival and the Philadelphia Folk Festival\, and sharing stages with the likes of Aoife O’Donovan\, the Wood Brothers\, and Tim O’Brien. \nDan Blakeslee \nWith a suitcase of songs\, Maine folk troubadour Dan Blakeslee ventured into the smoke laden subways of Boston in 1995 to practice his craft. His songs of true life adventures combine the essence of early folk music with a dose of country grit. He has toured the U.S. and performed with Josh Ritter\, David Wax Museum\, Lydia Loveless\, The Lumineers\, Old 97’s\, Sean Rowe\, The Black Lillies\, Liam Finn and Kimya Dawson among others. In 2015 his dream of playing Newport Folk Festival became a reality\, the location where Bob Dylan went electric 50 years earlier. Dan Blakeslee delivers his songs with that same heart of a young\, lyric scribbling troubadour\, who knows because he’s tried it\, can out sing a passing train. \n  \nTake a Listen: \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Gen Z Project
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets\n\nThis production will explore the obstacles members of Generation Z (born after 1996) face in their day to day lives such as RELATIONSHIPS with friends and family\, INFLUENCES and PRESSURES from SOCIAL MEDIA and from PEERS\, ACADEMIC AND CAREER EXPECTATIONS from parents\, school\, work\, and society at large\, and IDENTITY\, IMAGE and SELF WORTH. These challenges can lead to feelings of GUILT and SHAME\, to heightened STRESS\, as well as experiences of ANXIETY and DEPRESSION\, which eventually can lead to DEPENDENCE or ADDICTION. The rapid advent of technology\, coupled with the fallout from post-911 America\, has presented this generation with as much to process in one’s youth as any previous generation\, if not more\, and we wish to explore this generation’s unique experiences. \nA group of 14 Gen Zers have been creating this production together as a cast through a collaborative process known as DEVISING. Devising is a method of theatre-making where the whole creative team develops a script together through active participation in prompts\, exercises\, and activities\, as well as cooperative conversations. They have created a production by exploring improvisation scenes\, creating movement pieces\, free writing\, and finding poignant music selections\, among many other exercises. \nCheck out this trailer for Gen Z Project!\nhttps://www.instagram.com/p/Bz0qosNgokk/?utm_source=ig_web_options_share_sheet \n  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Eilen Jewell
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets\n\nEILEN JEWELL \nGypsy \n(Signature Sounds) \nAmerican Songwriter describes Eilen Jewell as\, “one of America’s most intriguing\, creative and idiosyncratic voices.” The Boise\, Idaho songwriter is one of a kind. \nThat singular voice springs forth from a woman of more than one mind\, and she taps into many of them on Gypsy (August\, 2019 Signature Sounds Recordings). By turns personal and political\, pissed off and blissed out\, Jewell’s first album of original material since 2015 expands brief moments of joy into lifetimes\, and distills epic sentiments and persistent doubts into succinct songs. \nJewell seamlessly blends heavy electric guitars and dirty fiddles on the rollicking country rocker “Crawl” with the sweet and understated horn section of the tender “Witness. “79 Cents (The Meow Song)” skewers sexism and discrimination with pointed humor over a circus bed of musical saw and horns. \nLongtime fans who love Eilen Jewell in classic country mode will delight in the pedal steel driven “These Blues” and the sole cover on Gypsy\, “You Cared Enough To Lie\,” written by fellow Idahoan and country legend Pinto Bennett. \nRather than pulling artist and listener this way and that\, the tensions within and between these twelve tracks propel Eilen Jewell’s eighth studio album forward as a remarkably cohesive full-length. \nCheck out Eilen’s latest single\, “79 Cents (The Meow Song)”\, just released July 9th\, 2019!\n \nIf you like…\n\nSlaid Cleaves\nGurf Morlix\nMary Gauthier\nDiana Jones\n\nYou’ll like Eilen Jewell. \nCheck out Eilen’s website here  \nPurchase Tickets\n\n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Tyler Hilton
DESCRIPTION:With opening act Alex2e\n\nPurchase Tickets\n\nA musician and actor\, Tyler Hilton has accomplished a lot in his career so far. As a teenager\, he released two Top 40 singles. He starred alongside Taylor Swift in her video for “Teardrops on my Guitar.” He played the role of one of his musical idols\, Elvis Presley\, in the Oscar-winning Johnny Cash biopic ‘Walk the Line\,’ and co-starred with Robert Downey Jr. in the acclaimed indie film ‘Charlie Bartlett.’ He may be most known for his musical role on the show ‘One Tree Hill\,’ which earned him a devoted fan base around the world.  His new album ‘City On Fire\,’ out January 18th 2019\, comes from a much more personal place for the California native\, who grew up in a family of musicians and songwriters and spent much of his childhood performing and jamming longside of them. Steeped in country\, blues\, folk and rock traditions\, the album captures the loose\, organic musical style that runs in Hilton’s blood. Hilton remembers trying to explain that style to producers in Nashville as a young songwriter. “I’d play them my favorite records; Robert Johnson\, Muddy Waters\, Frank Sinatra\, Elvis Presley\, Townes Van Zandt\, Weezer’s ‘Pinkerton\,’” he says. “I’d just get blank stares like\, ‘So…are you rock\, pop\, blues\, country…?’ And the answer was always\, ‘Yes\, all that.’” It may not have been the easy answer they were looking for\, but as Hilton explains\, “there’s a common denominator in all of that music to me. Maybe it’s a feeling of adventure\, or rebellion\, or just hearing real people\,” he says. “Whatever it is\, that’s what my feelings sound like\, and that’s what the music that comes out of me sounds like.” \nCheck out Tyler’s latest album\, City on Fire which was released in January\, 2019!\n \nIf you like…\n\nMatt Nathanson\nGavin DeGraw\nRoss Copperman\nKate Voegele\n\nYou’ll like Tyler Hilton. \nCheck out Tyler’s website here \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Pat McGee Band
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets\n\nBio’s are\, well\, boring and who’s got time to read boastful facts about a musician. \nSo\, here’s the scoop on Pat McGee… \nCart Before The Horse. Always. \nOctober of 1994 McGee\, books a studio to record his debut album. One\, small concern\, he wasn’t written a single original song\, ever. “I’ll figure it out” has always been his mentality. Pat’s first two songs he penned that fall in the mid-nineties are\, still to this day\, the crowd favorites\, “Rebecca” & “Haven’t Seen For A While”. \nHonest\, from the heart songwriting with musical influences deeply rooted in classic rock is prevalent throughout his entire 10\, soon to be 11 album catalog. His first obsessions were the guitar driven styles of Eric Clapton\, Allman Brothers Band & Grateful Dead paired with the Laurel Canyon singer-songwriters scene such as Jackson Browne and James Taylor. \nMcGee spent his early years\, touring colleges throughout the Mid-Atlantic & Southeast. He had long envisioned forming a band that could carry out his ideal lineup. It was all about the songs\, but backed by three part harmonies\, acoustic and electric guitars\, percussion along with drum set and of course melodic bass and keyboards—-all the elements that made those classic albums come alive on wax and stage. \nPat McGee Band finally formed in 1996 and immediately hit the road\, touring relentlessly for the better part of 10 years\, in one stretch doing 98 shows in 103 days. The band signed to Warner Brothers in 1999 after their rabid fanbase devoured over 100\,000 copies of their first 3 Independent releases. Along the way\, McGee fulfilled lifelong dreams of touring with the bands he grew up worshipping…Allmans\, James Taylor\, The Who and many more. PMB was invited to perform for President Clinton\, toured overseas with USO as well as recently to The Middle East and Africa. This allowed McGee and his band the opportunity to land on The USS Eisenhower to play for 5\,000 brave men and women serving on the Arabian Sea–an experience that was a highlight of his career. \nIn October of 2006\, PMB was crushed with the untimely death of founding member\, drummer Chris Williams. He was the backbone of the band and an integral part of the signature sound of the group\, both live and in the studio. \nMcGee has assembled various star-studded ensembles over the years and continues to reunite with the original band from time to time. \nHis career is thriving. In 2015 he released a self titled album\, that started off as just another record\, but ended up being a dream project. McGee assembled musical legends to join him in the studio: Russ Kunkel\, Leland Sklar\, Waddy Wachtel\, Danny Kortchmar\, and Jeff Pevar (nicknamed “The Section”). Other notable musicians such as Little Feat’s Paul Barrere\, Blues Traveler’s John Popper\, Train’s Pat Monahan\, Punchbrother’s Gabe Witcher as well as Pat McGee’s own band contributed to the album’s sound. \n2019 will bring touring of the entire US\, a recording session for his next album and continued growth of McGee’s homegrown music festival’s Ocean State Of Mind & Down The Hatch. \nTake a listen!\n\n\n\nIf you like…\n\nMatt Wertz\nIngram Hill\nPat Monahan\nJosh Kelly\n\nYou’ll like Pat McGee Band. \nCheck out their Facebook page here! \nPurchase Tickets

He is known for his energetic\, heartfelt shows\, where he connects with audiences through the strength of his songwriting and his quirky sense of humor. Day’s warm tenor voice “soars into fluttering\, high registers\, but also grates with real\, pleading grit\,” as one critic put it. After sales of over a million records and two Top 10 hits\, Day is back on the road in support of his new studio album\, Lanterns. \nA native of Bangor\, Maine\, Day began playing piano at age five and guitar at age12. By 15\, he was writing his own songs and performing across New England. Shortly after graduating high school\, Day became a fixture at college coffeehouses across the U.S. He wrote\, financed and released his first effort\, Australia\, which was named Best Debut Album at the 2001 Boston Music Awards. The Boston Globe called Day “gorgeously seasoned\, far beyond his years” with “a brave\, beautiful singing voice.” During his relentless touring schedule\, Day began experimenting with effects pedals and loop-sampling techniques as he performed\, layering live percussion with vocal harmonies and guitar parts to become a veritable one-man band. He went on to sell over 30\,000 copies of Australia as he navigated the independent music scene and continued to hone his craft. \nBrian Jarvis \nNew England singer/songwriter Brian Jarvis entices listeners with a captivating honesty and a voice drawing comparisons to David Gray and Matt Nathanson. Gentle\, intimate and conversational\, the album is an unadorned showcase of Maggie and Elsie’s superb songwriting as well as honest\, relaxed and stunning vocal and instrumental performances. \n“This is the album we never really intended to make” says Maggie (banjo\, guitar\, vocals) “we were struck by the ease and serendipity with which it came together\, like it was just ready to come out of us. I love this record\, I’ve never made anything that feels so comfortable and honest. I also reckon it’s our strongest collection of songs to date”. \n“We were deep into making this album before we knew we were making an album. There is a beautiful absence of pressure and self-consciousness that happened as a result; like the opposite of having a camera pointing at you while you arrange your face into a ‘normal and happy expression’. We were truly playing in the studio. SUMMARY:Boston Comedy Chicks
DESCRIPTION: Purchase Tickets\n \n~RECEPTION: 7:00~\n~SHOW: 7:30~\nPresented by Greater Newburyport Ovarian Cancer Awareness (GNOCA)\, this hip quartet is composed of four dynamic comedians—Tooky Kavanagh\, Erin Maguire\, Carolyn Plummer and Emily Ruskowski. \n  \nThough each has independently developed an enthusiastic following at popular Boston venues and beyond\, together they pack a real wallop—offering a restorative evening of wry commentary\, off-kilter wit and incisive hilarity. \n  \nWHO ARE THE EVENING’S COMEDIANS? \n  \nTooky Kavanagh \nHonesty\, charm\, charisma and edge characterize the wit of Tooky (rhymes with Cookie) Kavanagh. Regularly seen at such venues as the Comedy Studio (December 2018 Comic-in-Residence)\, ImprovBoston\, and Laugh Boston\, she has also appeared in New York City and Denver. Among her numerous stand-up credits are the 2017 Women in Comedy Festival\, Thunderfest 2017\, the 2017 Boston Comedy Festival\, Stand Up Thursdays at John Harvard’s (as a headliner)\, the Producer’s Club and Comic Sit-In at the Riot Theater. As an actor\, she is a regular cast member of the Redo Crew for Starstruck: Close Encounters of the Awkward Kind. She starred\, as The Humbled Hero in a 48-Hour Film Project film\, is a featured character in the short film\, Woman Unknown\, and a recurring character in the upcoming web series\, Paid for By. To benefit Lahey Health Cancer Institute\, Tooky evoked laughter and warmed hearts by performing at Comics Against Cancer\, at Breakaway in Danvers in May 2019. \nwww.tookykavangh.com \n  \nErin Maguire    \nHailing from Arlington\, MA\, Erin Maguire now calls New York City home\, and she performs regularly at clubs all over the Big Apple. She recently appeared on Gotham Live and has been seen on ESPN and Game Show Network. She also did her own headlining show\, called “Smahtass\,” at Stand Up NY. In addition to her two years with Women in Comedy Festival\, she has appeared at Woodstock Comedy\, Laugh Your Asheville Off\, Boston Comedy Festival\, and the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival (for the opening of the National Comedy Center). She is the first Boston Comedy Chick to win Mohegan Sun’s Last Comix Standing and Slaughter Stand-up Competition. Give her a mic and a stage\, and she’s totally off and running. \nwww.erinmaguire.com \n  \nCarolyn Plummer \nCarolyn Plummer has been doing comedy professionally for over 15 years. She has traveled extensively and says\, “I have worked at clubs\, colleges\, dead animal lodges\, theatres and corporations\, appearing with many of the top headliners in the business.” Although some comics rely on the monumental events of the day or the faux pas of the rich and famous\, Carolyn prefers to zero in on the humdrum\, day-to-day monotony and foibles of everyman. She sees no reason to gaze in the mirror and complain about not being pretty\, rich or young enough. The third child of a Congregational minister and an “aloof” homemaking mother\, she confesses to being “clueless” and claims her favorite band is “Blootie and the Hoefish.” Whiners\, self-loathers and the generally woebegone need beware. Among the many places she has appeared are Burbank Comedy Festival\, Boston Comedy Festival and the Women in Comedy Festival. \nwww.carolynplummer.com \n  \nEmily Ruskowski  \nA staple on the Boston stand up scene\, Emily Ruskowski is also a favorite at clubs around New England. Known for her bubbly personality and contagious energy\, she was named one of the Comedy Studio’s Comics in Residence. In 2015 she opened for Maria Bamford at the historic Wilbur Theatre in Boston. Emily has been profiled in the Boston Globe and the Washington Post and was a finalist in the 2018 Boston Comedy Festival. In addition\, she has performed on Laughs TV on the Fox Network and on the popular Two Dope Queens podcast. Emily reports that Miss Piggy\, Ru Paul and her father have influenced her sense of humor. Now there’s a wondrously potent mix. \nwww.emilyruskowski.com \nWHY NOW? \n  \nSeptember is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness month\, and in its ninth year\, GNOCA (www.ocawareness.org) is striving to increase awareness of the subtle symptoms of the disease\, to help provide patient services for women with ovarian cancer in the Greater Newburyport area\, and to fund research leading to a cure. Aside from direct assistance to local patients and their families\, proceeds from GNOCA events go to Ovations for the Cure (ovationsforthecure.org). \n  \nEach year\, about 22\,530 women in America are diagnosed with ovarian cancer\, and early detection is of prime importance in the quest for survival. In fact\, with increased awareness of the earliest symptoms of ovarian cancer\, a 93 percent five-year survival rate can be achieved. \n  \nGNOCA seeks nothing less than to make ovarian cancer\, a notoriously insidious and deadly disease\, a thing of the past. \n  \n************************ \nThere is something for everyone in this hip show. In past years\, this annual September event has been a sold-out sensation. The fact that it benefits the work of GNOCA makes it a compelling case of cutting-edge comedy with a commendable cause. \nPurchase Tickets\n \n

Dave Roper has raced every year since 1972\, competing on exotic vintage bikes at racetracks around the world and winning a reputation as a folk hero of the sport. \nBut Roper is hardly an adrenaline addict. He takes a philosophical approach to racing\, viewing it as a test of mental and physical abilities. As he enters his twilight years\, Roper reflects on the unconventional path he has followed in life\, the dangers he has faced and the choices he has made. \nIn the post-war era\, when many men and women sought security in conformity\, Roper took chances and dared to be different. A Vietnam veteran\, he never married and has lived alone in a small\, cluttered house on Long Island since 1978. But he finds fulfillment on the racetrack and through a large community of friends\, some of whom run a fan club in his honor. \n‘Motorcycle Man’ follows Roper from a workshop in Brooklyn to his home on Long Island to a racetrack in Canada. Along the way he encounters autograph-seeking admirers\, old friends and fellow racers eager to test their skills on the track. It also delves into Roper’s past\, including his historic win at the Isle of Man TT in 1984\, when he became the first American ever to win the notoriously dangerous race. \n‘Motorcycle Man’ celebrates the speed\, sweat and thrill of motorcycle racing\, while offering a meditation on craft\, obsession and what it takes to pursue your dreams. \n  \n\nPeace Out\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, September 14\, 2019\n10:00 am\n\n\nNewburyport Screening Room\n\n\nShort Film – 39 mins\n\n\nDianne Steimel\n\nUSA\n\nPart of a 3 short film presentation “Wheels of Fortune” \nPresented with Thursday Fields and Motorcycle Man \nSynopsis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSometimes a dream deferred\, even one for 45 years\, can be nurtured and brought back to life. In 2016 my husband Jerry retired at the age of 66 and promptly announced he wished to buy an old VW bus and drive it across the country. It seemed like an odd retirement plan but I learned he had attempted this earlier in his life at the age of 22\, in a 1966 VW Beetle\, and that journey had met with an ignominious end not far from his hometown of Louisville\, Kentucky. The idea of driving an old air cooled vehicle across country never died in him and he set off in 2017 in a 1973 VW bus which he hoped would take him from our home in Newburyport\, Massachusetts across the country to the Pacific Ocean. While my initial response to his quest was “You go live in your old bus\, and I will meet you wherever there is a nice hotel and spa”\, I knew I wanted to find a way to support and participate in his dream. Peace Out captures the view he had from the large bay window of his VW bus named Zorba as he tries to finish something he started 45 years ago. I created Peace Out as a homage to his dream and to all dreams which sometimes get deferred but with perseverance can find new life. \n‍Purchase Series Ticket\n \n\n\n\nEat Up\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, September 14\, 2019\n12:00 pm\n\n\nFirehouse Center for the Arts\n\n\n82 mins\n\n\nFiona Turner\n\nUSA\nView Trailer\n\nSynopsis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow hard can it be to deliver fresh\, nutritious school meals under the Federal reimbursement rate and within government regulations that kids will actually eat? \nEntrepreneur and philanthropist Jill Shah steps in to work with the school district to redesign school food and get Boston cooking for Boston; a prototype that she believes can be replicated across the nation. \nEat up is the story of that endeavor. The film follows a pilot project that shows exactly how hard it is for big bureaucracies to make change\, how big ideas depend on the “little people” on the ground\, in this case the lunch ladies\, and that although everyone may have the same good intentions\,different perspectives can lead to conflict and confusion along the way. \nThe initiative is driven by women: a headstrong entrepreneur\, a well intentioned bureaucrat\, an impassioned principal\, and a fast talking\, no nonsense cafeteria manager who leads her team of lunch ladies as the order unravels around them. We follow their journey as they laugh and cry\, as they deconstruct and then reconstruct a system that is so deeply entrenched and has so many depending on its success. \n20 million kids across the united states rely on the lunches they receive free at school as their main source of nutrition. Yet\, often\, the food they are served is so unappetizing it ends up in the trash. Eat up follows a Boston entrepreneur as she sets out to reinvent school lunch. Honey bees are threatened by indiscriminate pesticide use\, disease\, industrial scale monoculture farming and powerful corporate lobbying interests that work to influence the EPA and USDA\, who are our gatekeepers for a safe agricultural system. Our very food system is under threat and rests on the wings of these tiny insects and the commercial beekeepers that move them from farm to orchard pollinating crops that native pollinators can no longer adequately accomplish. \nThis film will follow migratory beekeepers and their bees throughout a growing season\, joining them as they stop to pollinate the myriad plants and trees that depend upon honey bees to grow and produce our food. Much of the work moving bees is done at night when the bees are in their hives so few people actually get to see what these beekeepers do. Throughout the journey we will meet farmers\, scientists\, chefs and academics to give perspective to this complex food system that we all depend on. We will explain the problems of modern large scale agriculture\, offer ideas on how it can be improved and learn about these pollinators that are a subculture of agriculture and a vital cornerstone of our entire food system. It’s a cinematic road trip that will result in a feature length documentary film about the importance of pollination to our food system\, the complex interrelationship between migratory beekeepers\, their bees and the agriculture system that needs these migratory honey bees in order to grow the food we eat. \n‍Purchase Tickets\n \n\n\n\nWays of Seeing\n\nIt Was All So Wonderful\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, September 14\, 2019\n1:45 pm\n\n\nNewburyport Screening Room\n\n\n70 mins\n\n\nKenneth J. To join Corey and her father Alan aboard their ship is to peek into a bygone world powered not by technology but by traditions handed down from generations. As they work with gear maintained for decades\, they fight to keep a family business afloat and maintain a way of life connected to and in partnership with the natural world. \nDirector Statement \nI wanted to tell a story about the commercial fishing industry from the point of view of a family-run operation. There are fewer and fewer independent outfits today in an industry that’s becoming rapidly more corporate and consolidated. And while a host of global factors impact the fishing industry\, I wanted to focus on the personal. THE LAST TRAP FAMILY follows Corey and her family working on the last trap fishing operation\, a bygone practice powered not by new technologies but by traditions handed down over generations. As we witness the strenuous work they do at sea and on land\, we also experience Corey’s deep connection to a way of life that she does not take for granted. It’s not just a job for her. I find personal inspiration in Corey’s story and in her family’s work\, and I find myself reflecting on how their family-run operation fits within the global context of fisheries\, a changing climate\, and the seafood choices of American consumers. While the US controls more coastline than any other country\, Americans largely pass up local seafood for cheaper imports. As working waterfronts shrink and disappear around the US\, I ask myself what value do we place on the sources of food we consume\, the jobs that we support\, and the resources that we share. -Hudson Lines \n\n\nRecipe for Disaster: Green Crabs in The Great Marsh\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, September 14\, 2019\n3:45 pm\n\n\nFirehouse Center for the Arts\n\n\nShort Film – 6 mins\n\n\nNubar Alexanian\nView Trailer\n\n\n\nPart of Troubled Waters Series \nLast man Fishing (60 mins) \nRecipe For Disaster: Green Crabs in The Great Marsh (6 mins) \nThe Last Trap Family (11 mins) \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSynopsis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRecipe For Disaster is the story of an ecological catastrophe in the making in four neighboring towns on the Massachusetts coast. As native scallops\, mussels\, clams\, and protective eelgrass disappear under the explosive invasion of green crabs\, scientists\, local experts\, and residents are scrambling to save the marsh from decimation. \nWhen faced with an invasive species and the prospect of ecological devastation\, residents along the New England coast are in search of a sustainable solution to save the marsh.\nRecipe For Disaster tells the story of the little-known invasion that is threatening an entire New England ecosystem\, and the struggle of local experts and residents to understand and prevent this catastrophe. Driven by the rising temperatures in the Gulf of Maine\, billions of green crabs have overrun the abundant natural marshes on coastal Massachusetts\, decimating the populations of clams\, scallops\, mussels\, and eel grass that birds and fish depend upon to survive. In just a few short years of explosive population growth\, the damage caused by green crabs has local residents and experts rushing to avert irreparable destruction with approaches such as transplanting eelgrass and paying fishermen to trap the crabs for compost. \nThe most promising solution\, however\, is popping up on gourmet restaurant menus in the form of green crab roe. \nThis short\, powerful documentary film explores one aspect of the consequences of climate change that are echoed in coastal communities around the world\, with stunning footage of the beautiful marshes and estuaries whose salvation may come on a dinner plate. \n‍Purchase Series Tickets\n \n\n\n\nWBCN and the American Revolution\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, September 14\, 2019\n7:30 pm\n\n\nFirehouse Center for the Arts\n\n\n120 min\n\n\nBill Lichtenstein\n\nUSA\nView Trailer\n\n\n\nSaturday Night Feature \nFree reception starts at 6 pm \nFilm at 7:30 pm \nQ & A after the film \nAfter party \n‍Purchase 9/14 Tickets\n \n\nSECOND SHOWING ADDED! \nSunday\, Sep 15\, 3:30 PM\nScreening Room\n$12 Adults\, $10 Students\nno reception\n‍Purchase 9/15 Tickets\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSynopsis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“WBCN and The American Revolution” is a landmark\, feature-length documentary that tells the previously untold story of the early days of the radical\, underground radio station\, WBCN\, set against the dazzling and profound social\, political\, and cultural changes that took place in Boston and nationally during the late-1960s and early-70s. \nIt’s the incredible\, true story of how a radio station\, politics and rock and roll changed everything. The film is produced by the Peabody Award-winning independent production company\, Lichtenstein Creative Media. \nTy Burr\, the Pulitzer-prize nominated film critic for the Boston Sunday Globe wrote: “I watched the movie with awe\,” and the film won “Best Documentary” at the 2019 DC Independent Film Festival and was the “Centerpiece: Documentary Spotlight” at the 2019 Independent Film Festival of Boston\, where it sold out a 900-seat screening. \nThe film shows how Boston\, which was overshadowed in 1967 by the exploding psychedelic scenes in both San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district and New York City’s East Village\, emerged as the central crossroad of the counterculture and political activism in the late-1960s and early-1970s. \nThe story is told through the extraordinary history of WBCN\, which in its early days called itself “The American Revolution\,” and the personal and political journeys of a compelling cast of characters who connect and intersect through the radio station and exploding music scenes\, militant anti-war activism\, civil rights struggles\, and the emerging women’s and LGBTQ-liberation movements. \nThe film includes dramatic first-person accounts from the radio station’s staff along with newly filmed and archival material that features the leading political\, social\, cultural and musical figures of the day\, who crossed paths with the radio station. They include Noam Chomsky\, Abbie Hoffman\, Jane Fonda\, Jerry Garcia and Duane Allman\, Lou Reed\, Bruce Springsteen in his first radio interview\, and Patti Smith\, performing in her first live radio broadcast. \nThe documentary also includes never before exhibited film material shot by Andy Warhol and cinema vérité pioneer Ricky Leacock and images from leading photojournalists of the day\, including the late Peter Simon\, brother of Carly Simon\, who is interviewed in the film. \nThese dramatic and compelling stories in “WBCN and The American Revolution” are expertly and powerfully interwoven with the original sights and sounds of the critical events of the era\, through the more than 100\,000 audio and visual items shared by the public for the film in an unprecedented archives search. \nThe film tells a story that is timely and relevant\, especially to young people\, who are seeking to use media to create social change. \nDirector and producer Bill Lichtenstein worked at WBCN starting at age 14 as a volunteer on the station’s Listener Line and later as a newscaster and announcer with his own weekly show. Bill’s last film\, “West 47th Street\,” won Special Jury Award for Documentary at the Atlanta Film Festival; Audience Award for Best Documentary at the DC Independent Film Festival; and Honorable Mention at the Woodstock Film Festival. It later aired on PBS’s P.O.V. and was called “must see” by Newsweek and “remarkable” by the Washington Post. \n‍Purchase Tickets\n \n\n\n\n\n\nRigged: The Voter Suppression Playbook\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, September 15\, 2019\n10:00 am\n\n\nNewburyport Screening Room\n\n\n80 mins\n\n\nMichael Kasino\n\nUSA\n\n\n\n\n\n\nView Trailer\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSynopsis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat would happen if political operatives tried to subvert the sacred American principle of “one person\, one vote?” What if they hatched and pursued that plan for years before anyone noticed what they were doing? That is the frightening tale told in a new feature documentary\, Rigged: The Voter Suppression Playbook. Narrated by Jeffrey Wright\, and shot during the chaotic 2016 election\, the film identifies and unpacks a shrewd ten-part strategy developed by Republicans to suppress votes that would be cast against them. \nWhy did they do it? \nObama’s 2008 victory revealed a rising demographic tide of non-white and younger voters that threatened GOP success into the future. Mark McKinnon\, a former Republican strategist\, notes in the film that Republicans could have moved toward the center and appealed to the rising minority majority\, but instead the GOP “figure[d] out how you turn out more of your people and less of the other guys.” In short\, suppress the vote. \nHow did they do it? \nRigged shows viewers just what they did – and continue to do – from creating new barriers to voter registration\, to purging American citizens from the voting rolls without notice\, to new and deliberate impediments to casting a vote. In addition\, the film shows how GOP activists developed an elaborate but false narrative of widespread voter fraud in order to justify the necessity for new and draconian voting restrictions. \nThe message of Rigged? \nIn the wake of the 2018 elections\, our democracy is still in peril. Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) states in the film\, “I fear for our younger people. I fear they will not have the kind of democracy I experienced . . . somebody’s got to say\, ‘This is not right.” Somebody’s got to say\, ‘We can do better.’” \n‍Purchase Tickets\n \n\n\n\n\nWell Groomed\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, September 15\, 2019\n10:00 am\n\n\nFirehouse Center for the Arts\n\n\n85 mins\n\n\nRebecca Stern\n\nUSA\nView Trailer\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSynopsis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCompetitive creative dog grooming is the most colorful competition in America and WELL GROOMED captures the hearts\, minds and imaginations of the artists involved. It is told through the eyes of Juan Segarra\, a Harvard educated man who having become acquainted with the history of his island home and its relationship to the United States chooses to embrace the independence movement and becomes a member of Los Macheteros\, a group dedicated to achieving its goals through armed struggle. \nSegarra’s personal narrative is an awakening to the reality his homeland is an American colony with a century long history of Puerto Ricans struggling to retain their cultural identity and regain control of the island’s destiny. The film opens in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria revealing the painful and deadly consequences Puerto Ricans have faced for decades. \nThroughout the film\, historical moments of resistance are woven into the narrative structure providing evidence of the past as a mirror for today. Segarra’s participation in the clandestine operations of the movement are revealed with intimate detail as he becomes the lieutenant to commandant Filiberto Ojeda Rios. These ‘acts of war’ against the US in the late 70’s and early 80’s includes the destruction of 10 US military planes at the National Guard runway in San Juan and the enormous heist of 7.2 million dollars from a Welles Fargo depot in Hartford\, Connecticut. For more than a decade the FBI was unable to trace the activities of Los Macheteros who have been labeled domestic terrorists. \nTheir fight for independence is a desire to rid the island of dependence on the US. It has evolved from decades of economic and political inequality where many perceive the only benefit of life as a colonial resident since 1917 is US citizenship. It is a qualified benefit as one cannot vote for President\, have a representative congressman or senator\, but can be drafted into the military. \nThe Last American Colony is a thought provoking and uplifting film in that it portrays a David and Goliath story through the eyes of those who fought and sacrificed everything for freedom. Juan Segarra’s belief in the struggle remains firm although he has spent more than 18 years in prison for his illegal actions. His focus today is on different tactics renouncing an armed propaganda strategy while still working for independence; his new career is that of a translator working in the Puerto Rican criminal justice system. \nAs he concludes the film with sharing personal stories at his Phillips Andover 50th reunion\, Segarra says\, “Nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience are important tools as are many others. Maybe there should be more of it. It’s looking like these times call for urgent action. Clearly\, I think violence is not the way to go and is in fact counterproductive. It kind of feeds into what – for lack of a better word – the system really wants.” \n‍Purchase Tickets\n \n\n\n\n“Our America” Series\n\n\n\n\nBorn in America\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, September 15\, 2019\n11:45 am\n\n\nNewburyport Screening Room\n\n\nShort Film – 34 mins\n\n\nZhan Luo\nView Trailer\n\n\nPart of “Our America Series” \nA Blue Sky Like No Other (31 mins) \nBorn in America (34 mins) \nReclamation: The Rise at Standing Rock (23 mins) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSynopsis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBorn in America\, focuses on a Chinese family who comes to California to have their baby in order to obtain the privilege of American citizenship. Van Dorn? is at once a poignant picture of one family’s tragedy\, as well as a revelatory inquiry into the murky inner-workings of the American defense establishment. \n“I need to finish Wes’s work. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe he was wrong. I don’t know. But the only way to find that out\, is to… look into that\, and to talk to people\, and to see if the worst was actually the truth” \n— Nicole Van Dorn\, Wes Van Dorn’s widow \n“When you know the quality of the people and the work that they want so badly to do well\, and you’ve entrusted your child to the military thinking that this is where they’re going to be able to be their best self\, and find out they don’t have the best equipment to work with – that is a very hard thing to learn. SUMMARY:Steve Sweeney
DESCRIPTION:With Sean Sullivan\n\n\nPurchase Tickets\n\nDubbed by one admirer “the undisputed King of Boston comedy\,” Sweeney embodies\, almost literally\, the city he calls home. A master of dialects and character voices\, Sweeney can riff on everyone from Dorchester church ladies to Beacon Hill pols to certain radio personalities who seem a little too old to be peddling rock and roll to younger generations. In fact\, while Sweeney has played to national audiences many times throughout his thirty-year career – not only by touring as a stand-up but also through roles in sitcoms and movies – he is so thoroughly Bostonian that he merits his own stop on the Freedom Trail.

SUMMARY:Magic Dick and Shun Ng in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets\n\nMagic Dick\, the legendary harmonica player for Boston’s legendary J. Geils Band has recently partnered up with guitar and vocal sensation\, Shun Ng\, to create one of the most dynamic musical acts to come out of Boston in a long time. \nSince 1969\, MagicDick has toured the world playing and blowing away clubs and stadiums with the J. Geils Band. He says” From the moment I first heard Shun Ng’s CD “Funky Thumb Stuff” I knew that a manifest musical collaboration was about to happen. Shun’s sound simply made me feel very alive and induced in me a synchronous alignment of musical DNA as if it was his intention as well as mine all along! I helped it along by asking his manager\, Ralph Jaccodine to introduce us at his office. A long and enlightening conversation happened on that day of our first meeting and now we are a duo and I couldn’t be more delighted.” \nShun Ng was born in Chicago\, raised in Singapore now based out of Boston. At 24 years old\, he is already an international star\, a soulful\, world-class guitarist\, vocalist\, and electric performer who in a short period of time\, has caught the attention of the top players in the music world including Quincy Jones who said: “When you see Shun Ng\, you won’t believe your eyes nor your ears – he belies all stereotypes\, all premonitions. I was simply blown away by both his soul and his science – his creativity and his uniqueness is astounding.” \n“In this collaboration with Magic Dick\,” Shun says\, “we wanted to make music in a way that no one had quite done before while remaining grounded in our roots. Magic Dick brings a powerhouse attack with ferocious precision and a killer groove to this duo. I have great respect for him\, he has seemingly done it all\, but is still constantly trying to push the boundaries of music and chase the best in himself\, a true artist. To be working with a true Boston legend is a real privilege.” \nJoin us for an unforgettable night of live music on the Firehouse stage! \nTake a listen!\n\n\n\nCheck out Magic Dick’s website here   \nCheck out Shun Ng’s website here \n  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Charlotte's Web
DESCRIPTION:Our Project Sparx Teen Ensemble presents Charlotte’s Web!\nTickets: $15 for adults\, $12 for 12 and under \nPurchase Tickets\n\nOverview\nThe Children’s Literature Association named this “the best American children’s book of the past two hundred years\,” and Joseph Robinette\, working with the advice of E.B. White\, has created a play that captures this work in a thrilling and utterly practical theatrical presentation. All the enchanting characters are here in this non-musical tale: Wilbur\, the irresistible young pig who desperately wants to avoid the butcher; Fern\, a girl who understands what animals say to each other; Templeton\, the gluttonous rat who can occasionally be talked into a good deed; the Zuckerman family; the Arables; and\, most of all\, the extraordinary spider\, Charlotte\, who proves to be “a true friend and a good writer.” Determined to save Wilbur\, Charlotte begins her campaign with the “miracle” of her web in which she writes\, “Some pig.” It’s the beginning of a victorious campaign which ultimately ends with the now-safe Wilbur doing what is most important to Charlotte. \n  \nWhat Is Teen Ensemble Outreach?\nFor many years\, the Firehouse has put on four productions per year as a School Show Series\, for students in the Greater Newburyport Area school systems to attend as part of their curriculum. This will be the first of our Project Sparx Outreach Productions\, where the Teen Ensemble will be performing one of those shows for local students. In addition to public performances\, we will have two Wednesday morning school performances. Documentation will be provided to send to your school to assist in being released for that day. This is an excellent opportunity for our Sparx teens to be a positive influence on elementary and middle school age children and provide inspiration to the next generation of artists. \nPurchase Tickets
