SUMMARY:Judy Collins
DESCRIPTION:$140/Members\n$160/Non-Members \nPURCHASE TICKETS\n\n*Due to the special nature of this event\, Member COMP Tickets and I Believe Passes will not be accepted*\n  \nJudy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals\, boldly vulnerable songwriting\, personal life triumphs\, and a firm commitment to social activism. In the 1960s\, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later\, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 55-album body of work\, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century. \nThe award-winning singer-songwriter is esteemed for her imaginative interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk standards and her own poetically poignant original compositions. Her stunning rendition of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” from her landmark 1967 album\, Wildflowers\, has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Judy’s dreamy and sweetly intimate version of “Send in the Clowns\,” a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical A Little Night Music\, won “Song of the Year” at the 1975 Grammy Awards. She’s garnered several top-ten hits gold- and platinum-selling albums. Recently\, contemporary and classic artists such as Rufus Wainwright\, Shawn Colvin\, Dolly Parton\, Joan Baez\, and Leonard Cohen honored her legacy with the album Born to the Breed: A Tribute to Judy Collins. \nJudy began her impressive music career at 13 as a piano prodigy dazzling audiences performing Mozart’s “Concerto for Two Pianos\,” but the hard luck tales and rugged sensitivity of folk revival music by artists such as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger seduced her away from a life as a concert pianist. Her path pointed to a lifelong love affair with the guitar and pursuit of emotional truth in lyrics. The focus and regimented practice of classical music\, however\, would be a source of strength to her inner core as she navigated the highs and lows of the music business. \nJudy Collins is as creatively vigorous as ever\, writing\, touring worldwide\, and nurturing fresh talent. She is a modern-day Renaissance woman who is a filmmaker\, record label head\, musical mentor\, and an in-demand keynote speaker for mental health and suicide prevention. She continues to create music of hope and healing that lights up the world and speaks to the heart. \nPURCHASE TICKETS

SUMMARY:An Evening with Charles "The Lord" Shaughnessy
DESCRIPTION:$25/Minimum Donation\nALL LEVELS OF SUPPORT ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED \nRESERVE YOUR SPOT\n\nEnjoy a fun evening with Charles who will be sharing stories of his life and career and how he truly became a “lord” all while helping to support 2 great non-profits & “partners in the port” – Turning Point\, Inc. and the Firehouse Center for the Arts. \nCharles was born to a showbiz family in London and educated at Eton and Cambridge University\, where he tried to “do something sensible” by getting a degree in Law. \nIt didn’t work. \nPerforming in the celebrated Footlights Revue was a lot more fun than Torts and Land Law so he decided to join the family business after all. After a few years of gainful employment in England\, Charles pursued a gorgeous American actress to Los Angeles\, married her and raised two equally gorgeous daughters\, who are the light of his life. He made his professional U.S. debut on this very stage in 1984 in Howard Brenton’s “The Genius”. He went on to a successful and multi-faceted career on stage and screen that took him from exotic locations like Hawaii and Paris to stages on Broadway and The North Shore Music Theatre. He considers himself extremely lucky to have made a living in this crazy business and has enjoyed every second. You might recognize him from his roles on some beloved TV shows like The Nanny and Mad Men\, but then again….you might not . \nRESERVE YOUR SPOT\nRESERVE YOUR SPOT

SUMMARY:The Firehouse Celebrates
DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, the Firehouse Center for the Arts celebrates 200 years since our Marketplace opened. In those 200 years\, the building has transformed from a single level marketplace to adding the second story\, first as a chair factory and then followed by a Lyceum where the likes of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Daniel Webster enlightened mid-19th century Newburyport residents. In 1864\, the Marketplace was transformed into the Central Firehouse of Newburyport where it remained until 1979 when a new Fire Station was built. For nearly a decade\, the former Firehouse sat unused until the Society for the Development of Arts and Humanities of Greater Newburyport proposed transforming the building into cultural center for the City. Construction began in 1987 and in 1991\, the Firehouse Center for the Arts opened its doors. \nThis year\, we celebrate our past while looking forward at our future. Our goal is to raise $200\,000 to commemorate our 200th Anniversary. Join the celebration! \nSILENT AUCTION LIVE NOW\n\nHOSTED BY BILLY COSTA\nWhat: Our Annual Gala\nWhere: Black Swan Country Club\, Georgetown\, MA\nWhen: Friday\, September 8 at 6:00pm \n \nM.K. Years later\, Peyroux would cite iconic Piaf as an influence on her music and record a rendition of the classic La Vie En Rose\, soulfully capturing the tune’s romanticism and melancholy. \nBorn in Athens\, Georgia in 1974\, Madeleine “grew up in a house filled with music” and from an early age “instinctively realised music’s soothing power” but it was her teenage years in the French capital that turned the childhood notion into an all-consuming vocation for life. \nYoung Madeleine moved to Paris with her mother in 1987 following her parents divorce. “To soothe me during the upheaval”\, she recalls\, “I was given a guitar and took to playing in the streets almost immediately.” \nThe curious teenager started skipping school to frequent the city’s Latin Quarter where street musicians dwelled\, keen to learn about their music and way of life. At 16\, the fearless teen joined the Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band with whom she toured the streets of Europe\, discovering Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday while “voraciously picking up all the songs and all the guitar playing” she could. \nThe two-year touring adventure set Madeleine on a creative path for life and proved to be a gateway to greater things. In 1991 the band travelled to New York where Madeleine’s unique talents were spotted by Atlantic Records’ Yves Beauvais. The young singer declined the music executive’s initial record deal offer but relented several years later and in 1996 her breakthrough album Dreamland was released. \nDreamland sold a striking 200\,000 copies and Madeleine’s dusky voice was likened to that of Jazz greats Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Featuring top musicians Marc Ribot\, Vernon Reid\, Cyrus Chestnut\, Charlie Giordano\, Greg Cohen\, Kenny Wollesen\, Regina Carter\, Leon Parker and James Carter\, the album included Madeleine’s renditions of Holiday’s Gettin’ Some Fun Out of Life\, Bessie Smith’s Lovesick Blues\, and I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter. \nDreamland cemented Madeleine Peyroux as a ‘classic’ musical talent that was here to stay\, and the soulful singer found herself touring the world\, singing with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and opening for Cesaria Evora. \nThirty years after her formative busking days Peyroux is the proud curator of nine beguiling albums and an accomplished performer with sell out worldwide tours under her belt. Her atmospheric version of Serge Gainsborough’s La Javanaise was used in the soundtrack of Oscar Winner The Shape of Water and her countless accolades include the coveted BBC International Artist Of The Year honour. \nMadeleine’s thirst for creative exploration is unfading and her willingness to face creative challenges remains as solid now as it was three decades ago. \nWith endearing passion and great curiosity the unstoppable genre-defying virtuoso continues her search for the good and examines life with the treasured William Congreve belief that Music has charms to soothe the savage beast. \nMadeleine might attribute her success to “mostly luck” but to the industry and loyal fans alike\, it is the immense talent and utter dedication to her craft that shines through. “Peyroux is a tremendous talent and almost a total intuitive” reflects Larry Klein\, “she has the capacity to get the magic. When she sings and plays her guitar\, great things happen.” \nPURCHASE TICKETS

SUMMARY:Full Moon Story GRAND Slam
DESCRIPTION:In Advance\n$25/Adult\n$23/Students and Seniors \nDay Of\n$28 for all audience members \nPurchase Tickets\n\nWhen I Said YES! \nJoin The Actors Studio of Newburyport for their end of the year celebration where the top winners of 2023\, compete for the title of “Full Moon Grand Slammer”\, but anyone in the audience will also have the opportunity to tell a two (2) minute story. It can be based on the theme\, or it can be about any subject they would like to talk about. \nThis is the eighth season of true-life stories told without notes or props on themes ranging from synchronicity to pronouns. The Studio’s Full Moon Story Slam is modeled after NPR’s Moth Radio Hour. It is a story telling competition with a few simple criteria for both the official judges and the audience to vote for their favorites. \nIt has been a consistently popular event since its inception\, so much so that\, during Covid restrictions\, it expanded nationwide as a Zoom event. \nThe Slam is your chance to gather as friends and share true stories from your lives. Simply put\, a story slam is a competition based on the art of storytelling. It puts a dual emphasis on content and performance\, encouraging storytellers to focus on what they’re saying and how they’re saying it. It is an exercise in crafting stories within a set time limit. \nPurchase Tickets\n\n
