SUMMARY:The Sweetback Sisters Country Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Non-Member: $30\nMember: $27 \nPurchase Tickets\n\nThe Sweetback Sisters are BACK! For the first time since 2019\, The Sweetback Sisters will be bringing their Country Christmas Sing Along Spectacular to the Firehouse Center for the Arts and we can’t wait for an evening full of music\, trivia\, prizes\, warm-n-fuzzies\, and so.much.more. Don’t miss out on this holiday tradition! \nTechnically speaking\, The Sweetback Sisters come from Brooklyn\, but philosophically\, they hail from a parallel universe\, one where country music history zigged instead of zagged. \n“I wouldn’t call us a throwback band\,” says Emily Miller. “What we do is look back to the golden era of country music and imagine that the genre took a different evolutionary fork\, that the honky-tonk element took over rather than the pop-rock sound you hear everywhere today. I feel like we’re actually a very modern band\, just on an alternate timeline.” \nIt’s been more than 15 years since The Sweetback Sisters first began forging their own sonic universe\, and on their new album\, ‘King Of Killing Time\,’ they push their sound into more adventurous and playful territory than ever before. Centered around the charismatic\, airtight harmonies of Emily Miller and Zara Bode\, the record’s ten tracks are a mix of infectious originals and unexpected interpretations of everything from George Jones to Gram Parsons. Hints of jazz and ragtime flesh out the Sisters’ unique brand of classic country\, as Miller\, Bode\, and their remarkably versatile band conjure up a singular blend of heart\, humor\, and virtuosic musicianship. \nPurchase Tickets\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Fastball
DESCRIPTION:$50/All Tickets \nPurchase Tickets\n\nFormed in 1994 in Austin\, Texas\, Fastball combined a fondness for melodic\, Beatles-inspired pop with the alternative aesthetic of late-’90s mainstream rock. Guitarist/vocalist Miles Zuniga\, bassist/vocalist Tony Scalzo\, and drummer Joey Shuffield — all veterans of Austin’s underground rock scene — originally banded together under the name Magneto U.S.A. After signing with Hollywood Records\, the musicians changed their name to Fastball and released their debut album\, Make Your Mama Proud\, in 1996. The album demonstrated the band’s synthesis of modern flavor and bygone pop hooks\, a combination that would later launch Fastball into the mainstream. \nThe follow-up effort\, All the Pain Money Can Buy\, appeared in early 1998\, featuring a considerably tighter band and more pop flourishes. Although the bandmates were still working side jobs at the time of its release\, lead-off single “The Way” proved to be a meteoric hit\, topping the American rock charts for seven weeks while enjoying crossover success as a pop single. “Fire Escape” and the piano-fueled “Out of My Head” did similarly well\, and All the Pain Money Can Buy went platinum within six months of its release\, earning two Grammy nominations along the way. Fastball celebrated their success with a considerable amount of touring\, including shows alongside Marcy Playground and Everclear. \nThe Harsh Light of Day arrived in fall 2000\, featuring piano work by Billy Preston and an increasingly arty sound\, including the Top 40 hit “You’re an Ocean.” Fastball eventually left the Hollywood roster in favor of a new deal with Rykodisc. A retrospective compilation\, Painting the Corners: The Best of Fastball\, marked the band’s final release for Hollywood Records in 2002. Two years later\, they resurfaced with Keep Your Wig On\, having fully embraced their power pop roots with the help of co-producer Adam Schlesinger. The album strengthened Fastball’s work ethic\, with frontmen Zuniga and Scalzo writing together for the first time. That collaborative spirit helped fuel another album\, Little White Lies\, which appeared in 2009 to warm reviews. \nAfter several years of focusing on live work\, Fastball returned to the studio in 2015\, recording in their hometown of Austin. The project emerged in May 2017\, a self-released album titled Step into Light\, and the band supported it with an extensive tour of the United States and Canada. The following year\, Fastball celebrated the 20th anniversary of All the Pain Money Can Buy with an expanded edition of the 1998 album; they accompanied the reissue with a hometown concert in Austin\, Texas. \nMost recently\, in October 2019\, Fastball returned with The Help Machine\, an album produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos\, and in Sept 2021 and throughout 2022 have been releasing music exclusively thru Patreon. Their new album\, The Deep End\, was released on June 17\, 2022 and they have spent most of 2023 touring the country with Gin Blossoms\, Sugar Ray\, and Tonic. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Emily Scott Robinson
DESCRIPTION:Non-Member: $25 – Rows A-D/$22 – Rows E-K/$20 – Rows L-O\nMember: $22 – Rows A-D/$20 – Rows E-K/$18 – Rows L-O \nPurchase Tickets\n\nColorado songwriter Emily Scott Robinson beckons to those who are lost\, lonely\, or learning the hard way with American Siren\, her first album for Oh Boy Records. With hints of bluegrass\, country\, and folk\, the eloquent collection shares her gift for storytelling through her pristine soprano and the perspective of her unconventional path into music. \n“I think that the thread running through the album is those things that call to us\, and how we can’t resist that call\,” she says. “It’s about the siren songs that come up through our lives.” \nThough not fully autobiographical\, American Siren gracefully blends imagined characters with meaningful people she’s encountered on her journey. Showcasing her ability as a storyteller\, “If Trouble Comes a Lookin’” invents a scene where a vulnerable priest and an unhappy wife meet in an Arkansas hotel bar. “Hometown Hero” is an emotional tribute to her cousin\, a veteran lost to suicide. “Lost Woman’s Prayer” stems from the words of a sage friend she met while traveling abroad\, while “Every Day in Faith” is a personal testament to seeing things through. \nAs the album’s lead track\, “Old Gods” carries the siren concept to its fullest potential with beautiful three-part female harmony; she originally wrote it for a community production of Macbeth. Meanwhile\, “Things You Learn the Hard Way” was completed after asking for relevant scenarios from her social media followers. Yet there’s a part of her own life in every song\, too. That’s especially true in “Cheap Seats\,” about a distracted waitress who’s bound (someday) to realize her dreams. Robinson wrote it after seeing John Prine and Bonnie Raitt sing together at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in 2019. \n“If you make music that you love that tells the truth\, or that tells a story\, everything emanates from what you have inside\,” she says. “I knew at the core that I love writing\, I love telling stories and I love performing. I knew if I just kept doing that\, even when I didn’t always know what the next step was\, that it would continue to grow and that the people who were meant to be a part of that would find me.” \nRobinson grew up in Greensboro\, North Carolina\, and turned toward guitar at age 13\, after a summer camp counselor closed out the nights by playing songs by Joni Mitchell\, Cat Stevens\, and Dar Williams every night. She taught herself to play in the early 2000s by printing guitar tabs from the internet and singing to CDs by Indigo Girls and James Taylor. But she didn’t pursue songwriting until after seeing Nanci Griffith perform in Greensboro in 2007. \n“I went home and I wrote a really sad\, beautiful country song\,” Robinson remembers. “I was like\, ‘Wow\, that was easy.’ And then I kept trying to write through college and I realized\, ‘This is not actually that easy.’” \nGraduating from Furman University with degrees in history and Spanish\, Robinson took a job as a social worker and translator in 2011. “I moved to Telluride when I was 24 to work as a victim’s advocate for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault\,” she says. “I fell in love with Telluride. That’s really where my dream started to be born of doing music.” \nIn 2013\, she found kindred spirits at Planet Bluegrass’ The Song School\, a songwriting retreat in Lyons\, Colorado\, where other participants encouraged her talent\, and just as importantly\, showed her that being a touring musician could be a viable financial option. Before temporarily moving away from Telluride\, Robinson went into town and sat on the empty stage where the city’s annual bluegrass festival is staged\, promising herself that she’d be singing on it someday. \nBolstered by the positive response of her 2016 debut album\, Magnolia Queen\, Robinson and her husband packed everything into an RV and hit the road\, with Robinson booking her own shows along the way. That same year\, her songwriting landed her among the Kerrville New Folk Winners at the esteemed Texas festival. The winners embarked on an eight-city tour of Texas that fall\, introducing Robinson to an audience that remains invested in her career. \n“That was my first time touring\,” she says. “It was so much more fun than I thought it would be. I’m a homebody and I was anxious about it because I hadn’t done it. I thought it would run me ragged. What I didn’t account for was how much energy I would get from it and how great it would feel to get in touring shape and be singing every night and have my stories be super on-point and loving the experience of finding an audience.” \nRobinson received significant acclaim for her 2019 album\, Traveling Mercies. And her long-held dream came true later that year when she sang on the Telluride Bluegrass Festival stage as the winner of the Telluride Troubadour Contest. A poignant standalone single in 2020\, titled “The Time for Flowers\,” prompted a private Instagram message from Oh Boy Records’ Jody Whelan\, letting her know how meaningful the song was to his family. They struck up a fast friendship\, then decided to partner for a release of American Siren. \n“It is bigger and riskier and more expansive than my last collection\,” Robinson says. “It feels like I wrote some songs that I’m going to grow into as I continue to perform them. I actually cried after I finished every one of them. I was so relieved that I was able to write them. I carved out a little more of my own experiences into these songs. They’re excavating some deeper stuff than I’ve touched on before. I think they will have a healing quality for people who listen.” \nFor her fans and for herself\, this revealing collection proves that heeding the call to make music was the right decision. “Ever since this dream was born\, I don’t think it’s ever left my mind\,” Robinson says. “I’ve worked toward it every day\, even when I felt like I was stumbling in the dark. Now I can look back and see how beautifully it all knits together.” \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Eric Hutchinson
DESCRIPTION:“Sounds Like This” 15th Anniversary Tour\nNon-Member: $50\nMember: $45 \nPurchase Tickets\n\nSinger/songwriter Eric Hutchinson is feeling nostalgic as he prepares to spend 2023\, and into 2024\, celebrating the 15th anniversary of his debut album\, Sounds Like This. “It’s a special record for me – one that changed my life\, my career\, and introduced my music to a new audience I could only have dreamt of\,” the Takoma Park\, MD native reflects. To commemorate the anniversary\, Eric has announced that he will be playing shows all year long\, performing the album in its entirety. He’s also revealed that Sounds Like This will finally be available on vinyl for the first time ever. Furthering the deep-dive into his past\, Eric also released a new single\, “Sad Songs”\, a forgotten pop tune he wrote and performed regularly on tour in 2008 but never got the chance to record until now. \n“I’m thrilled to spend 2023 reflecting on how my life and the world has changed in 15 years\,”  Eric says. “I hope people will join me on the trip down memory lane. Maybe bring a long-lost college friend to one of my concerts\, or give Sounds Like This a re-listen for the first time in forever and remember what life was like back in 2008 – when Barack Obama was elected president\, BlackBerrys were all the rage\, and watching Netflix meant getting little red DVD packages in the mail.”  \nSounds Like This ended up being a chart-topping album released by Warner Bros. Records\, but it almost never happened. Just before Eric recorded those songs\, he says he was a frustrated kid who was seriously considering quitting music. “I had spent several years toiling away on the road\, playing tragically low-attended shows\, and recording several failed albums that were not ready for prime time\,” Eric remembers. But as discouraged as he was at the time\, Eric says he hated the idea of telling his friends and family that he had quit music. “I decided to dig down deep and make one last-ditch attempt to record a professional debut that lived up to the legacies of my musical heroes like Stevie Wonder\, The Beatles\, Paul Simon\, and Michael Jackson\,” Eric recalls. “I went for broke\, literally\, to capture the music that I was hearing in my head – the songs that represented me at that time. I could never have imagined where those songs would take me.” \nToday\, Eric is a seasoned musician and touring artist who’s released eight albums\, performed in all 50 states and experimented with diverse kinds of musical genres like pop\, folk\, reggae\, alternative rock\, and jazz. Still\, more often than not\, Eric says if people are familiar with his music\, they know the songs from Sounds Like This. “I love getting to hear stories from so many people who remember growing up with the music\,” Eric says. “I’ll meet people and they’ll tell me about watching the music video for “Rock & Roll” on VH1 while getting ready for school\, or listening to “Food Chain” on a burned mix CD that an older sister made to celebrate getting her driver’s license\, or singing “Ok\, It’s Alright With Me” in their college a capella group. I’m proud of this album I made many years ago\, but I’m even more gratified by the part my music got to play in so many other people’s lives. I’m hoping I get to celebrate Sounds Like This with all those people on this tour.” \nPurchase Tickets

DESCRIPTION:$15/Non-Members\n$12/Members \nPurchase Tickets\n\nThe Soggy Po Boys\, native to New England\, have quickly become an institution. They are spreading the good news of New Orleans music across the northeast and beyond\, playing at concert halls and street corners; music festivals and burlesque festivals; bars and libraries; wherever the party requires. Part of the beauty of New Orleans music is that it’s celebrated and appreciated wherever it goes\, from the street to the theater. \nThe Po Boys formed in 2012 to shake the walls of a local club on a Fat Tuesday but have honed their sound and become more than a Mardi Gras centerpiece. Exploring the vast musical traditions of New Orleans and expanding their repertoire to look beyond NOLA jazz\, the band includes traditional Caribbean tunes (it’s been said that New Orleans is the northernmost city in the Caribbean)\, as well as Meters funk\, soul\, and brass band / street beat music. There are a myriad of traditions that flow into New Orleans culture just as there are tributaries that feed the Mississippi\, and the Po Boys are eager to explore what makes the music of New Orleans so damn special. You’ll hear the heavy influence of the New Orleans sound across the band and in the stories told by their original tunes. Despite the scope of its sound\, the outfit is only seven people\, and thrives on the interplay and group dynamics that bring this music to life. \nThe Soggy Po Boys are: \nStu Dias- Vocals / Guitar\nEric Klaxton- Clarinet/Sop. DESCRIPTION:Row A-D: $33 for Non-Member/$30 for Members\nRow E-K: $30 for Non-Member/$27 for Members\nRow L-O: $27 for Non-Member/$25 for Members \nPurchase Tickets\n\nSuzzy and Lucy released their last recording I Can Still Hear You in the fall of 2020.  The album was largely recorded in the darkest hours of the Covid shutdown in the spring of 2020 in NYC.  After starting the recording in Nashville\, the mother/daughter team went back to New York City just as the city closed up.  They set up studios in their bedrooms: Lucy in Brooklyn\, Suzzy in Manhattan\, and finished the record.  Hailed as “one of the year’s best” by Americana Highways\, the new album has been met with high praise. (see attached sheet).  Suzzy and Lucy have recorded two albums previously\, Fairytale & Myth (Independent Music Award winner) and Mud & Apples (also nominated for IMA). \nThose familiar with Lucy Wainwright Roche are aware of her bell tone voice\, her unshakable melodies\, and her knack for wise\, wry lyrics. It’s no surprise that Wainwright Roche is the daughter of Suzzy Roche (The Roches) and Loudon Wainwright III\, half sibling to Rufus and Martha Wainwright.  Lucy has carved out her own career as a touring singer/songwriter and recording artist\, with five critically acclaimed solo recordings released on her own label: Eight Songs\, Eight More\, Lucy\, There’s a Last Time for Everything and her most recent Little Beast (Winner of the Independent Music Award for Best Singer/Songwriter.)  Other recordings include a collaboration with her sister Martha Wainwright on Songs In the Dark\, a collection of lullabies. For over a decade\, as a solo act\, armed with a guitar\, a deadpan sense of humor\, insightful songs\, and a voice that makes tough guys cry\, she’s built a solid following across the US and Europe.  As an opening act she has often appeared with such luminaries as The Indigo Girls\, Mary Chapin Carpenter\, Neko Case\, and her brother\, Rufus\, and she’s one of a few who can step out alone in front of a thousand strangers and play an entire set to a rapt audience. \nSuzzy Roche is a singer/songwriter/performer/author and founding member of the singing group The Roches.  She has recorded over eighteen albums\, written music for TV and Film\, and toured extensively for forty years across the U.S. and Europe. She has performed with the experimental theater troupe\, The Wooster Group\, for over twenty years. Her children’s book Want To Be In A Band (Random House) was published in February 2013.  Wayward Saints (Hyperion/Voice) is her first novel and was a selection of the Spring 2012 B&N Discover Great New Writers Program. Her most recent novel The Town Crazy was published in August of 2020. www.suzzyroche.com \nTHE CHICAGO TRIBUNE’s review of Suzzy Roche and Lucy Wainwright Roche’s performance at The Space in Evanston Illinois said\, “Their voices intertwined in gorgeous union…mother and daughter had the room in the palms of their talented hands. This was a glittering gem of a show.” \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:Rayland Baxter
DESCRIPTION:w/ special guest Sugadaisy\n\nMember: $60 – Rows A-D/$50 – Rows E-K/$40 – Rows L-O\nNon-Member: $65 – Rows A-D/$55 – Rows E-K/$45 – Rows L-O \nPURCHASE TICKETS\n\nFor the making of his fourth album If I Were a Butterfly\, Rayland Baxter holed up for over a year at a former rubber-band factory turned studio in the Kentucky countryside—a seemingly humble environment that proved to be something of a wonderland. “I spent that year living in a barn with the squirrels and the birds\, on my own most of the time\, and I discovered so much about music and how to create it\,” says the Tennessee-bred singer/songwriter. “Instead of going into a studio with a producer for two weeks\, I just waited for the record to build itself. I’d get up and go outside\, see a butterfly and connect that with some impulsive thought I’d had three months ago\, and suddenly a song I’d been working on would make sense. That’s how the whole album came to be.” \nThe follow-up to 2018’s critically acclaimed Wide Awake\, If I Were a Butterfly finds Baxter co-producing alongside Tim O’Sullivan (Grace Potter\, The Head and the Heart) and Kai Welch (Molly Tuttle\, Sierra Hull)\, slowly piecing together the album’s patchwork of lush psychedelia and Beatlesesque pop. In addition to working at Thunder Sound (the Kentucky studio he called home for months on end)\, Baxter recorded in California\, Texas\, Tennessee\, and Washington\, enlisting a remarkable lineup of musicians: Shakey Graves\, Lennon Stella\, several members of Cage the Elephant\, Zac Cockrell of Alabama Shakes\, Morning Teleportation’s Travis Goodwin\, and legendary Motown drummer Miss Bobbye Hall\, among many others. In an especially meaningful turn\, two of the album’s tracks feature the elegant pedal steel work of his father\, Bucky Baxter (a musician who performed with Bob Dylan and who passed away in May 2020). Thanks to the extraordinary care and ingenuity behind its creation\, If I Were a Butterfly arrives as a work of rarefied magic\, capable of stirring up immense feeling while leaving the listener happily wonderstruck. \nBaxter’s debut release as a producer\, If I Were a Butterfly bears a dazzling unpredictability that has much to do with his limitless imagination as a collector and collagist of sound. “Sometimes the bullfrogs in the pond outside would pulse in a certain tempo and I’d apply that to a song\, or I’d hear a bird chirping and it would inspire me to add harmonica in a particular place\,” he says. “I could be walking around this massive building in the middle of the night and the air-conditioning would turn on\, and it’d give me the idea to include a synth part that holds a similar note. I’d wait for those moments to happen and whenever I tried to force anything\, the music usually rejected it.” \nA perfect introduction to If I Were a Butterfly’s elaborate sonic world\, the album-opening title track begins with a recording of a Baxter singing at age four\, then drifts into a delicately sprawling reverie ornamented with so many lovely details (lavish flute and cello melodies\, radiant horns\, the hypnotic harmonies of Lennon Stella and Baxter’s girlfriend\, Sophia Rose). “I liked the idea of the first voice on the record being me as a little kid\, not knowing where I’d be today\,” notes Baxter\, who embedded newly unearthed audio clips of himself and his older sister Brooke all throughout the album. Graced with the combustible guitar work of his bandmate Barney Cortez\, “Billy Goat” kicks up a potent tension with its restless grooves and hot-tempered gang vocals. “It’s a breakup song about being with someone who’s on a different life path—one side wants to influence the other\, and inevitably you part ways\,” says Baxter. From there\, the album takes on a feverish momentum with “Rubberband Man\,” a delightfully frenzied track channeling a wild and giddy freedom. “There’s rubber bands all over the property at Thunder Sound—in the earth\, in the concrete\, used as insulation for the studio\,” says Baxter. “I took a mishmash of images in my head and it turned into a song about staying flexible\, rolling with the punches.” \nIn its searching reflection on love and loss and striving for transcendence\, If I Were a Butterfly reaches a quietly glorious intensity on “Tadpole”: a piano ballad threaded with childhood memories at turns oddly tender (catching frogs and crawfish in a nearby toxic creek) and nightmarish (hearing the gunshot when an across-the-street neighbor took her own life). And on “My Argentina\,” If I Were a Butterfly closes out with a piano-driven and painfully raw outpouring\, its starkness intermittently broken by soulful strings and gospel-esque harmonies. “One time at the studio I stayed up all night and played that song maybe 100 times; we ended up using the last take\, which was recorded at about five in the morning\,” says Baxter. “It’s a song that represents the thoughts one might have about a perfect love life\, and I love how it ends the album in a big angelic cloud of reverb.” \nFor Baxter\, the act of self-producing such a sonically and emotionally expansive body of work proved both exhilarating and arduous. “It really wore me out to spend all that time alone at the studio\, editing the hell out of this record; my heart definitely suffered\,” he says. “But I also had the guidance of my dad\, who was in my dreams all the time—if I was moving too fast\, I’d hear him telling me to slow down.” Another profound influence on the album-making process: the 2018 deaths of Baxter’s close friends Billy Swayze (a musician whose parents owned the rubber band company that became Thunder Sound) and Tiger Merritt (the vocalist/guitarist for Morning Teleportation\, who worked with Swayze in constructing the studio). “Billy and Tiger had been going up there since 2015\, and finally they turned it into a legit recording studio\,” he says. “It’s a very special place to me\, so they’re two of the four angels I decided to dedicate this record to.” \nEven in its most somber moments\, If I Were a Butterfly wholly fulfills Baxter’s mission of imparting a certain purposeful joy. “It’s been a weird few years\, but I think the big picture is for us to just exist and find love and be loved\, and try to see that all the daily bullshit is simply bugs on the windshield\,” says Baxter. “I hope that this album makes people feel the way I do whenever I listen to my favorite records\, and that it gives them a platform to dream on.” \nPURCHASE TICKETS\n\nZach Littleton and Johny Lovan have been aware of each other’s existence since third grade in Bowling Green\, Ky. — after all\, Littleton “dated” Lovan’s sister in that era “mostly because we were both big redheads and everyone said we should\,” he recalls. It took many years for them to start making music together\, and even longer for them to realize they worked best as a duo\, but since 2016\, Sugadaisy has quietly built a substantial fanbase by simply being its weird\, wonderful selves. \nIndeed\, Sugadaisy is no ordinary band\, largely because Littleton and Lovan are no ordinary musicians. One of their songs (“Space Cadet”) has nearly two million listens on Spotify simply thanks to word of mouth and some love from high-trafficking YouTube creators. They’ve performed live in shirts and ties and with their heads covered in pantyhose. With tongue more often than not firmly in cheek\, they’ve largely released tunes rooted in guitar-based folk and singer/songwriter fare\, but they also have punk\, hip-hop\, Spanish\, and math rock songs itching to emerge. \n  \n  \n  \nPURCHASE TICKETS

SUMMARY:Tiger Saw - 25th Anniversary Concert
DESCRIPTION:$15/Members\n$18/Non-Members \nPurchase Tickets\n\nThe beloved indie rock band Tiger Saw formed in Newburyport\, MA in 1999. The band has since released nine albums\, and played almost 1000 shows across three continents. The ever-changing lineup has included 65 different players on record\, and even more in a live setting. \nOn August 18\, 2024\, the classic\, Newburyport-based lineup will reunite for one night only\, at the Firehouse Center for the Arts. This is the band that recorded Tiger Saw’s debut album “Blessed are the Trials We Will Find”\, which was released in March\, 2002 on Kimchee Records. This lineup hasn’t played together since 2003.  \nThe band will feature singer/guitarist Dylan Metrano\, cellist/singer Juliet Nelson\, guitarist John Ryan Gallagher\, bassist Jake Trussell\, and drummer Matt Kulik.  \nUpon its release\, Hallie Engel at Boston’s Weekly Dig raved of Blessed Are the Trials We Will Find\,  “Tiger Saw has created an album with no sharp edges; it’s music as delicate as a China teacup\, with beauty hiding in the empty spaces. Things move from wistfully slow to quiet pop and always seem like they could break out of the mold and explode midway-but never do. And that’s what makes this band so nice; the listener is never roused from the honeyed drowsiness Tiger Saw induces.” \nThere is something magical about the vocal harmonies between Metrano and Nelson\, and at the Firehouse show\, Tiger Saw will revisit their early songs from this era- songs which haven’t been played live in decades. \nSinger/songwriter Jason Anderson will open the show. Anderson lived in Newburyport for a brief time while collaborating with the band\, and now lives in New Brunswick\, Canada. Jason Anderson is an award-winning indie folk artist whose work is as anthemic as it is affecting. Personal and passionate\, his music crackles with life. MRTI Agency wrote “Jason sings directly to your heart\, and does it so vividly\, you can’t help but feel the effects of the performance long after you leave. Yes… he is THAT good.” \nDon’t miss this very special one-time event in a beautiful setting\, where it all began. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:An Evening with John Gorka
DESCRIPTION:$35/Members\n$40/Non-Members \nPurchase Tickets\n\nFrom New Jersey\, John Gorka is a world-renowned singer-songwriter who got his start at a neighborhood coffeehouse in eastern Pennsylvania. Though small\, Godfrey Daniels was and is one of the oldest and most venerable music institutions and has long been a hangout for music lovers and aspiring musicians. In the late 1970’s\, John was was one of these aspiring musicians. Although his academic coursework at Moravian College lay in Philosophy and History\, music began to offer paramount enticements. Soon he found himself living in the club’s basement and acting as resident MC and sound man\, encountering legendary folk troubadours like Canadian singer-songwriter Stan Rogers\, Eric Andersen\, Tom Paxton and Claudia Schmidt. Their brand of folk-inspired acoustic music inspired him\, and before long he was performing his own songs – mostly as an opener for visiting acts. Soon he started traveling to New York City\, where Jack Hardy’s legendary Fast Folk circle (a breeding ground for many a major singer-songwriter) became a powerful source of education and encouragement. Folk meccas like Texas’ Kerrville Folk Festival (where he won the New Folk Award in 1984) and Boston followed\, and his stunningly soulful baritone voice and original songwriting began turning heads. Those who had at one time inspired him – Suzanne Vega\, Bill Morrissey\, Nanci Griffith\, Christine Lavin\, Shawn Colvin – had become his peers. \nIn 1987\, the young Minnesota-based Red House Records caught wind of John’s talents and released his first album\, I Know\, to popular and critical acclaim. With unusual drive and focus\, John hit the ground running and\, when an offer came from Windham Hill’s Will Ackerman in 1989\, he signed with that label’s imprint\, High Street Records. He proceeded to record five albums with High Street over the next seven years: Land of the Bottom Line\, Jack’s Crows\, Temporary Road\, Out of the Valley and Between Five and Seven. His albums and his touring (over 150 nights a year at times) brought new accolades for his craft. His rich multifaceted songs full of depth\, beauty and emotion gained increasing attention from critics and audiences across the country\, as well as in Europe where his tours led him through Italy\, Belgium\, Scotland\, Ireland\, Holland\, Switzerland and Germany. He also started sharing tours with many notable friends—Nanci Griffith and Mary Chapin Carpenter among them. All this brought his music to an ever-widening audience. His video for the single “When She Kisses Me” found a long-term rotation on VH-1’s “Current Country\,” as well as on CMT and the Nashville Network. \nIn 1998\, after five successful recordings and seven years at Windham Hill/High Street\, John felt the need for a change and decided to return to his musical roots at Red House Records. The choice was driven\, in part\, by the artistic integrity that the label represents in an industry where the business of music too often takes precedence. The 1998 release After Yesterday marked a decidedly different attitude towards making music for John\, and his next release The Company You Keep held fast to his tradition of fine songwriting\, yet moved forward down new avenues. Its fourteen songs displays John’s creative use of lyrics and attention to detail. Andy Stochansky played drums and shared production credits with John and Rob Genadek. Ani DiFranco\, Mary Chapin Carpenter\, Lucy Kaplansky and Patty Larkin contributed stellar guitar work and vocals to this fan favorite. Old Futures Gone was informed by his life as husband and father of two young children and also contained the colorful experience of many hard years on the road. Writing in the Margins followed in 2006 and was an engaging collection of sweet and serious songs that spanned many musical genres—folk\, pop\, country and soul—and featured guest vocalists Nanci Griffith\, Lucy Kaplansky and Alice Peacock. Now with this\, his 11th studio album\, he returns to his roots with So Dark You See\, his most compelling and traditional album to date. \nIn addition to his 11 critically acclaimed albums\, John released a collector’s edition box featuring a hi-definition DVD and companion CD called The Gypsy Life. Windham Hill also released a collection of John’s greatest hits from the label called Pure John Gorka. In 2010\, he also released an album with his friends and Red House label-mates Lucy Kaplansky and Eliza Gilkyson under the name Red Horse. Getting high praise from critics and fans alike\, it landed on the Billboard Folk Charts and was one of the most played albums on folk radio. \nMany well known artists have recorded and/or performed John Gorka songs\, including Mary Chapin Carpenter\, Nanci Griffith\, Mary Black and Maura O’Connell. John has graced the stage of Austin City Limits\, Mountain Stage\, etown and has appeared on CNN. His new song “Where No Monuments Stand” is featured in the upcoming documentary Every War Has Two Losers\, about activist and Oregon Poet Laureate William Stafford (1914-1993). \nJohn Gorka lives in Minnesota and when not on the road\, he enjoys spending time with his wife and children. He continues to tour\, playing festivals\, theaters and clubs all over North America and Europe. \nPurchase Tickets
