SUMMARY:Storm Surge: 2040 Film
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: Free \nReserve Tickets\n\n2040 is a hybrid feature documentary that looks to the future\, but is vitally important NOW! \nDrawing on the best minds from around the world to focus on climate\, economics\, technology\, civil society\, agriculture and sustainability\, 2040 maps out a pathway for change that can lead us to a more ecologically sustainable and equitable future. \nMotivated by his 4-year-old daughter and concern for the planet she will inherit\, Damon Gameau embarks on a global journey to meet the innovators and change makers pioneering the best solutions already available to us today to improve the health of our planet and societies. Inspired by these discoveries and guided by the many children he consults with along the way\, Damon interweaves dramatic sequences and high-end visual effects to conjure a positive portrait of what ‘could be’ instead of the current dystopian future we are so often presented. \nAimed at a broad audience that includes children and their parents\, serious information is delivered with irreverence and humor. Experts are shrunk into scenes to emphasize a point\, animation makes the invisible visible and visual effects show how scaling these solutions by 2040 will positively impact our lives and our planet. This rich visual approach combined with the structure of an intimate letter to a daughter from her father allows for lightness and cheekiness\, ensuring the film is both entertaining and educational\, with the end goal being to inspire action and change. \nMany academics believe that people become inactive or paralyzed on this topic because it all just feels too overwhelming and alarming. 2040 is an aspirational film full of hope about the possibility to make changes that will shift the course for humanity and the planet. \nThis is the narrative the next generation needs to see\, to aspire to\, and to believe is possible. \nReserve Tickets

SUMMARY:Climate Resiliency Screening
DESCRIPTION:Presented by NDFF\nPurchase Tickets\n\n$20/Adults\n$18/Students & Seniors \nAs we celebrate our 20th year\, the Newburyport Documentary Film Festival is pleased to partner with the City of Newburyport Resiliency Committee to present an evening of films that address the climate crisis as it affects our community. This timely program about one of our biggest collective challenges will take place Sunday\, April 28 at the Firehouse Center for the Arts\, Newburyport. Reception begins at 6 PM. Film screnning at 7 PM. Tickets $18-20. Chowder from New England Fishmongers will be for sale during the reception.   \n“Last Man Fishing” (dir. JD Schuyler) is a cinematic look at a vastly changing seafood system through the lens of small-boat fishers and experts. Narrated by best-selling author Mark Bittman and starring “Captain Tim” Rider\, proprietor of Kittery’s New England Fishmongers\, the film explores the struggle for the survival of independent\, sustainability-oriented fishermen in the face of the industrial-scale destruction of ocean habitats by corporate seafood interests.     View The Trailer Here \nInspired by the Massachusetts Oyster Project\, “The Oyster Revival: Restoring Our Waters” (dir. Allison Keir) is a short film about the miraculous power of oysters to clean and restore our polluted urban and coastal marine habitats. \nFunding for this program is provided by the City of Newburyport Resiliency Committee through a grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs’ Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Action program.  \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:The White House Effect Documentary
DESCRIPTION:The Newburyport Documentary Film Festival and the Greater Newburyport Green Expo proudly present: \n“The White House Effect” Documentary\n$10 / Suggested Donation \nPurchase Tickets\n\n  \nA Pivotal Moment in Climate History Revealed\nCap off your Green Expo experience with an exclusive evening screening of the powerful documentary “The White House Effect\,” directed by the acclaimed team of Bonni Cohen\, Pedro Kos\, and Jon Shenk. \n  \nFilm Synopsis\n“The White House Effect\,” from directors Bonni Cohen\, Pedro Kos and Jon Shenk\, examines a crucial missed opportunity in climate history. Through archival footage\, the film focuses on the George H.W. Bush administration (1988-1992) when Bush promised to use “the White House effect” to address global warming. \nThe documentary reveals how this promise unraveled as Bush found himself caught between his chief of staff John Sununu and industry leaders on one side\, and his EPA chief Bill Reilly and scientists on the other. The film culminates with the 1992 Rio Earth Summit\, where U.S. actions undermined global emissions agreements\, setting the stage for our current climate challenges. \n  \nWhy This Film Matters to Our Community\nAs we gather for the Green Expo to explore practical sustainability solutions\, this documentary provides crucial historical context for understanding why climate action remains challenging today. By examining this pivotal moment in climate history\, we can better appreciate the forces that shape environmental policy and the importance of community-led initiatives like the Green Expo. \n  \nNote: This is a separate ticketed event from the daytime Green Expo activities. \n  \nThis screening is presented in conjunction with the 2025 Greater Newburyport Green Expo\, made possible through funding from the City of Newburyport Resiliency Committee\, via a grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs’ Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Program.
