CALL FOR
SUBMISSION DETAILS
Since 2002 The Firehouse Center for the Arts and the New Works
Festival has fostered the development of local theater
companies, writers, directors, and actors. Providing insight on
the playwriting process from conception to presentation, this
festival allows us to share with the community a rare and
special look at the abundant talent in New England. Submitted
plays are judged by an independent panel of theater
professionals. The 2009 New Works Festival will be showcasing
full-length plays, and ten minute play scenes as memorized and
staged readings.
THE FIREHOUSE CENTER FOR THE ARTS
NEW WORKS FESTIVAL 2009 –
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
“THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT”
A Festival
Celebrating New 10-Minute and Full-Length plays
January
28-February 1, 2009
Submissions of short plays and monologues
up to 10 minutes in length and full-length plays are currently being
accepted from New England area playwrights. Writers may submit up to
two 10- minute pieces or one full-length play (90 – 120 minutes).
Submission
Criteria
- All work must be original and previously
unproduced. No adaptations.
- Shorts must be no longer than 10 minutes
in length. Please time your plays by reading them aloud to be
sure they are within the correct time limit, bearing in mind
that blocking and scene changes may add to the running time.
Note: One page of typed text is usually equivalent to one minute
of dialogue.
- The cast of 10-minute plays should not
exceed six actors.
- There are no restrictions on subject
matter, although excessive language is discouraged.
- Plays must be typed in standard format: in
12-point Currier or Times New Roman font, with one-inch margins
and numbered pages.
- Plays submitted without an application
form will be disqualified. Each submission must have it’s own
application form. Submissions must be
postmarked or hand delivered by August 8, 2008.
General
Information
- A separate reading committee will select
plays to be submitted to the panel of judges based solely on the
criteria outlined above. Any play that does not meet the
allotted guidelines will be automatically disqualified.
- Due to the nature of the Festival,
full-length plays will be presented as staged readings with
minimal sets, props and technical cues. The Festival Committee
will assign directors.
- Please submit four (4) copies of each
script. Put the title on each page, but do not include the
author’s name. Please include a character breakdown: gender,
ages, genre and description.
- On a separate titled page, please indicate
the TITLE, AUTHOR’S NAME, ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER and EMAIL
ADDRESS. Please paperclip the title page to the script. This
page will be separated from the script before it is submitted to
the judges.
- Successful submissions will be posted on
our website in early October and receive notification via email.
The judges’ decisions are final. Copyright licenses always
remain with the author(s). Submitted scripts will not be
returned. Always retain your original copy.
- Judges’ Choice Award (Full-Length Play)
will be awarded an Honorarium of $150.00.
- Judges' Choice Award (10-minute play or
monologue) will be awarded an Honorarium of $75.00.
- The New Works Festival has arranged with
the acquisitions department of Samuel French, Inc. to accept
judges’ choice selected manuscript plays for publication and
licensing consideration. (Recommendation only, no guarantee of
publication)
