The Firehouse Center
This historic building built as a market house and lyceum by the
citizens of Newburyport in 1823 served as the Central Fire Station from the mid
1800s until 1980. A cooperative effort by the public and private sectors has
restored the structure as a center for the arts and public events so that it
will continue to serve the community for generations to come.
After its reopening in 1991, the Firehouse Center
and Schwartz/Silver Architects, Inc. won an "Honor Award For
Architecture" from The
American Institute of Architects. The Firehouse is managed by the
Society for the Development of Arts and Humanities of Greater Newburyport
(SDAH) as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

MISSION
The
mission of the Firehouse Center (Society
for the Development of Arts and Humanities) is to advance the arts and
humanities in the Greater
Newburyport region by:
·
fostering the growth and development of the
individual artists and cultural organizations through its programs and
services;
·
stimulating understanding of and participation in
the arts and humanities, and;
·
presenting, sponsoring and producing a broad range
of cultural, educational and artistic programs.
1991
heralded the Gala
Opening
of the Firehouse Center. Over the past eleven years, the Firehouse Center
has been a hallmark of local culture and arts, drawing patrons from the
local communities as well as a large tourist crowd in the spring, summer
and fall. Programming is broad-based, and includes dance, music, theater,
an art gallery, and a school show series.
New initiatives this past year include a Saturday
Morning Family Series featuring interactive entertainment for young
audiences and a Celebrity concert series
to attract a more diverse audience. In January of 2008, we will feature our
6th annual New
Works Festival, inviting writers throughout New England to submit
works for staged readings. One of our important goals this year is to
design programming that invites older adults in the community to be a key
part of the "Arts-Inspired Gathering Place" of Newburyport!
